The 2012 Olympics Thread - Its Over :(

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread (5th August, Page 131)

I went to the athletics on Friday night.

From the moment you arrive in the park and get through security the atmosphere is just unbelievable. There is a fantastic buzz around the place, similar to the FA Cup Final last year but there are more than twice as many people there and 99% are supporting your team. If you have been to a really good amusement park you would find it quite familiar - its the same sort of vibe, wandering round this huge park where there is so much going on. In fact, if you spent the day at the Universal theme park (except it was all sport instead of Harry potter and shrek) and then had a City game in the evening that would be close to the experience.

Just wandering around the park and soaking it all up is fantastic. When we were walking towards the hockey stadium, you could see the scoreboard from outside. GBR 3 Pakistan 0. Then there was this massive cheer from inside the stadium and it was 4-0.

Inside the athletics stadium, when Vicky Pendleton won gold a buzz went around the stadium from people who had been following it on IPads and whatnot. Then they did a stadium announcement and the place went bananas.

Watching Jessica Ennis and Greg Rutherford in particular was phenomenal. The long jump was just in front of where we were sitting so we had a really good view.

A tremendous experience. Highly recommended.

Pendleton setting a new world record there

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread (5th August, Page 131)

I wasn't really looking forward to the Olympics but after that brilliant opening ceremony I got hooked (as always!!)

Not sure that I agree with you about the commentators though, after all it is (IMHO) just the way everyone reacted after we won the PL, everybody went absolutely mad and, if we hadn't been City supporters, I bet we would have felt that the hyperbole then was way OTT.

I've loved them all, especially Clare Balding, Ian Thorpe and, strangely enough, Gabby Logan!! Sorry guys.:-)

p.s. Loved the way nearly every cyclist has mentioned the Manchester Velodrome as well. After all, that Velodrome was included in the bid, we were supposed to be having the cycling if I remember correctly.

I don't think people initially thought the coverage went over the top. I was getting fans of other clubs, even none football fans, telling me how much they enjoyed watching the last day of the season. I'd imgaine all these adverts will be getting on peoples nerves though.

Re: The 2012 Olympics Thread (5th August, Page 131)

Anyone see those 2 rowers from yesterday after getting Silver. Could hardly stand, crying, apologising for letting everyone down (they didnt), Sir Steve Redgrave in the back cying, and John Inverdale starts crying at the end. Its amazing to see what sport can do to human beings

I guess we all know that being City fans though

Yeah, I really felt for them. The second guy out of the boat was absolutely spent, he didn't even have the energy to stand and walk. And both of them were absolutely devastated to have ''only'' won the silver. It really brought home what these athletes go through to try to realise their dream of olympic glory. And those two lads had the gold snatched away from them in the last, what, 20 seconds of their race. Heartbreaking for them.

Looking forward to the 100m tonight...
