The Album Review Club - End of Round #9 Break (page 1904)

Not hard to hear Mott Do You Love Me, given that the review pointed that ;-). It was intentional on the part of the band.

Quite a lot of people have commented on the songwriting in derogatory terms and the songs are simple but that is entirely deliberate.

I was quite amused by the reference about them not being Bob Dylan, because Gene Simmons has in fact written songs with Dylan.
Yeah I got that ,but i actually think ‘Great Expectations’ is more MH than ‘do you love me’ though the obvious reference is the Stones a per your review.

I said last week in my review that I thought it necessary to listen to an album at least three times to start to get a proper sense of it. That was before I'd listened to Destroyer by Kiss once and then twice. I was severely tempted to bin of the third listen and bung on some Billy Joel instead but I've heard he's shit and only has one good song, although no-one can agree which one it is.

Anyway, I've never liked Kiss but had no good reason for that having never listened to them. I guess it was the image more than anything. I'm also not a fan of heavy rock or whatever this is generally and don't really have a frame of reference for comparisons or associations. Although I quite like some Blue Oyster Cult, who appear to dress normally but write some kind of ambitious operatic stuff as well as plain old rockers (a proper BOC fan will probably put me right on their modus operandi).

I was exposed to a lot of UFO when I was younger, my brother raved about them. He never listened to Kiss though. Although I wasn't really into UFO I didn't find it unbearable. Neither did I find this album unbearable, that would be stretching a point somewhat. I found it poor though, formulaic, the vocals weak, strip away the image and it really did feel like a High School band playing at prom night.

Sorry @OB1 I don't like to criticise for the sake of it but this is the first album on this thread that I've found to be so lacking in merit. Some of the other negative reviews on here have conceded this song was alright or that was but I've come away from it with nothing.

Of slight interest to me is the involvement of Bob Ezrin who seems to be well feted and has an extensive CV. He's more familiar to me for his involvement in Lou Reed's Berlin, an album that I think could have been so much better but is rendered somewhat leaden by the production. I'd have to say on the evidence so far Bob Ezrin isn't all that. Maybe he's to blame for this album.

It's a 4 for me.

It’s “Allentown.” :)

Then he should know better (Dylan that is).

Nah, he’s no Bruce Springsteen and Allentown is no Shipbuilding or Don’t Give Up
“Movin’ Out” is passable. The fact that we are quibbling over two pretty trivial pieces of art should say a lot about him. Anyway, he’ll never be forgiven for the musical sin of “Just The Way You Are” among many other god-awful songs (add fucking “Innocent Man” to the list of songs he should be — ironically — jailed for).

He got rich; Randy Newman didn’t. There is no justice in this world.
