The Album Review Club - Week #143 - (page 1884) - I Should Coco - Supergrass

Has the change to listing the favourites via PM made everyone super secretive, with pretty much zero discussion on the songs? People often wait till the end to out their guesses up but by this point we usually praise/slag songs openly and refer to others etc. If that is it, maybe the next break we go back to doing it on the thread.

Anyway, my thoughts so far.

Drive-by Truckers is a band that gets a lot of love on here. I can see why. Something isn't yet clicking for me, I should really like them but just not there yet. Liked this song though.

Really liked the Extreme song, particularly when they go on some fun solos.

The National, while I have listened to most of their albums, and I kinda like their 'sound', really do only have one string to their bow. Still, breaks the playlist up well.

A couple songs that made me move my hips in Chocolate Samurai and Troglodyte.

Real Estate intrigued me. Maggie Rodgers I thought was Taylor Swift when it first came on. A similar artist with that type of poppy-mellow sound with a touch of electronics but without the stigma of Tay-tay worth maybe checking out (for whoever nominated it) is Kississippi, and her Mood Ring album.

Rival Sons still going strong. Yart Act have been quite current and promising recently. If I missed anything, it is because it has either slips my mind just now, or I nominated it.

I assumed the National song was from this year's album earlier in the spring, Which I listened to and it kind of washed over me. I see now it is from their second album of the year, a 'surprise' album released in September. Not often a band releases two albums in one year. Who do they think they are, Taylor Swift? Kidding aside, credit for the work put in post covid.

Just had a wee look, a bit of a popularity context of obviousness. Foo fighters in the top 20? Fuck right off. Glad to see Young Fathers do pretty well, Benefits get in there too (although the album did not live up to their live performance). The Paramore album should be nowhere near the top 5. Had no idea Sleep Token had a new album out. That's my contribution to your discussion.

Lots to disagree with in it. Not least of which is the idea that Boygenius's middling generic effort is the best album rather than a triumph of hype over content.

Had a bit of a listen to the Ian Hunter album, quite enjoyed some of it and fair play to him he must be getting on a bit now.

Oh and well done to whoever nominated the Viagra Boys, been meaning to check them out properly for a while and this prompted me to do that.

Similar thoughts to me (which should worry you!) - I find Drive By Truckers decent enough musically but there are too many lyrics for me. You don’t have to put a book into one song ffs!
The National are very one dimensional to my ears. Don’t really like the singers voice but I can understand their appeal.
Stand out are never heard before tunes are Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, Fantastic Negrito (obviously), Viagra Boys, Rival Sons (who also had two albums this year) and Daniel Donato when he stops singing - some lovely guitar on this one.
As usual, no idea who has chosen what, but I’ll have a stab later

The only two I didn’t think were at least okay were the Pigs etc. (Black Sabbath rip-off) and the Ian Hunter thing (pedestrian). In theory I can’t stand The National (thanks a lot, Radiohead) but in practice they’re all right. I have expressed previous fondness for the DBTs (which might be a hint but probably isn’t), and some of Jason Isabel. I liked parts of the Fantastic Negrito record we heard before too. There are two tunes I really loved: my selection and another one whose catalog I have been diving into.

"Tropic Morning News" is actually from their first album First Two Pages of Frankenstein back in April 2023.

Their second album Laugh Track from September 2023 is actually the *better* album, IMO.

My second choice for 2023 songs was from that album, a beautiful duet I am still second guessing...

"Crumble" - The National (featuring Roseanne Cash)

Looks like my favourites are different from others.
The best of the songs that I had not heard of this year.
The National....Tropic Morning news.
A group where I tend to like one or two songs from each album.

Ian Hunter...This is what I'm here for.
Loved Mott the Hoople in the 70's and this is a simple but great track for me.I will definitely give a listen to the lp.

Rival sons,Real Estate,Fantastic Negrito songs that had not heard before but really enjoyed.

Just do not get Extreme,Yard Act and the Dylan songs at all.
Dylan a weird one I like a lot of his songs but for some reason most of the songs on the music threads do not appeal to me.

If the Yard Act song had been Petroleum I'd have been in, it's got a Beck vibe to it and much better for it.

That Fantastic Negrito has weathered well since we listened to the album.

Probably the best playlist we’ve had Imho, lots of my favourites
DBTs Jason Isbell, The National,Dylan ,RIval Sons
A few I’ve not heard before but like Maggie Rogers , Yard Act, Real Estate and Viagra Boys
Hats off to who ever put Ian Hunter forward, one of my all time musical heroes,
met him a couple of times just after he’d left Mott The Hoople sound guy.
ive seen him live on numerous occasions and was due to see him before the pandemic but he had to cancel as he suffers from tinnitus , didn’t think he was still
recording at 84! and his voice still sounds ok.
