The Album Review Club - Week #145 - (page 1923) - Tellin' Stories - The Charlatans

This will remind me that I'm not going to see Bruce this tour :( Sold my ticket as I have to take my daughters to Silverstone for all three days of the British GP.
Where are you staying? Nearby I hope? We are all camping/ caravanning near Daventry in a field. Did the whole official site thing but it's far too cramped.

Got dragged down in the mid 80's to St James Park.
Found his stuff to be okay nothing more on the River and Born in the USA.
The concert though was far too long and couldn't wait for it to finish.Seemingly this was the norm for him.Well over 25 songs if I remember correctly.
Not been a fan but I have never heard this or anything before the River.
I haven't high hopes but you never know.

I listened to that concert for free from the balcony of my mates student flat next to SJP. It was a very long concert indeed and I have to admit didn't fully hold my attention.

Brilliant. Thank you for taking the time (which I’m sure was a pleasure) to put this together. It’s an album I haven’t played out for ages, but one whose best moments, back in the day, I actually enjoyed more than Born To Run (Darkness was his greatest for me).

One thing you wrote caught my eye:
“Like many of his songs, the song is true”
Do we know that is really the case? It might be, but I do recall reading he was a master of compiling stories and characters which rang true, and were certainly based on an authentic milieu. But I’ve never thought of them, in the main, as wholly true.
Some are true. Sandy, Rosalita even the names of the friends are real. Others are based on his relationships (my fathers house). Many other songs are confections but always based on the realities that he experienced.
Nebraska is based on a real life serial killer.

I went to a later show on that tour at Roundhay Park in Leeds. For me as a fan of the songs, such a long set was incredible and was one of my top 5 ever gigs if not top 3. He came on stage at 4.20pm and it was at least 8pm before it ended.

It looks so dated now, but this is the best memento I can find.
What a summer that was, and Bruce and his band were riding high as the best live act in the world back then.
Edit the clip does work if you follow the link and watch via YouTube
