John I've seen it happen. A forum I used to visit had a video game sub. We were discussing a game that was coming out soon and one of the testers ( let's say the Source ) was a member and giving some real good info on things that hadn't been released. Another poster, wanting to be Billy Big Balls ( we'll call him the ITK ), went on another gaming forum and posted some of the info. The publisher came after him (ITK) with lawyers, he said where he had got the info from, and they figured out who the tester (source) was and fired him.

Slightly different. The transfer market is so speculation and gossip heavy that it'd be impossible to trace a rumour. I could suggest that we were interested in a player that we haven't been linked with as of yet (say Lewandowski) and if the club were actually making moves to buy him, it'd be absurd to pursue to me to find my source.

It depends how popular the rumour becomes and how visible it is.

I see the snipers are out for the ITK''s again on this board.

Ever summer without fail and the transfer window isn't even open yet.

@johnmc the club flushed out leaks only a few years ago, under Hughes. They gave inside info to a few people, but gave them all different names.

They were then able to see who was leaking to where.

There's a reason spursmad, who was our top itk for a time stopped posting you know, and I'm sure Kevin Hitchcock got in huge trouble on an entirely unrelated topic ;-)

I think most on here (me for certain) are encouraged by the ITK's giving us a heads up that we are in for so and so. I respect their comments and their need to be discreet with the information as that may compromise either their jobs, or access to further information. I would imagine that each ITK knows how far they can push the boundaries in terms of putting info into a general forum. Yes, most don't come to fruition, but I never for one moment never believe the ITK at their time of posting.

The off season is a long time for fans, and engaging in banter/debates with other Blues who share info and cryptic clues helps pass the long days between May and August.

Interesting and valid points. I would not want to put myself out there as an ITK but I do work for a professional firm that works with Football clubs (as well as a few agents and other associated professionals) and I guess on some issues I know stuff that is not out there in the public domain or even in the gossip columns. However, what I know first hand confirms what I guess a lot of you suspect which is that 99% of ITKs and journos are merely educated guessers and speculators.
I could post stuff that I hear in the office or direct from people in the industry but there are good reasons why I don’t firstly my professional credibility is ultimately at stake i.e. if an FD of a football club tells me they have agreed to sell player x and I then run to the internet and post that as fact then my professional relationship with the FD is at serious risk and also ultimately my job. Secondly nothing is football is certain until it is signed - deals fall over all the time so what is the point in claiming to be an ITK and saying "I know we're in for Pogba and it looks on"! Means nothing in reality, its just a reasonable guess followed by a slightly optomistic but vague statemement. So I don’t play the ITK game.

But as pointed out, say they gave an insider the name of Benzema (for eg as we aren't linked to him) to flush the guy out, it's not beyond the realms that someone could post a thread on here to say we are after him which would be totally unrelated to the guy at the club being told. Would the guy get sacked then because he was the only one that was planted with that info?
