I don't see Swann taking that many in Aus. It just doesn't happen for Offies down there.

Phil Edmonds and John Emburey were fundamental in helping England the last time we won The Ashes in Australia back in 86/87.
I'm not 100% but I'm sure they took quite a few wickets between them during that series. I know they stifled the Aussie attack once the 'quicks' had finished their spells.
Hopefully Swann (and Monty) can do the same ?

Now you mention it I think Embers got a 5 for and a 7 for. Edmonds wasn't as effective though. Not had much luck since then. The cat got a few in one test but that's about it.
I can't see us playing 2 spinners this time. Monty is cover isn't he?

Love those Swanny diaries. Very funny man.

History might not be favourable to offies but we've never gone down there with as good as Swann is, nor have the Aussies had a team playing this poorly. Swann is also brilliant at beating batsman who go after him, which the Aussies ultimately will do. Add to the fact the pitches are not as hard and fast as they used to be so less wickets for the seamers = Swann leading England wicket taker. I realise it's not that easy but I reckon the 6/1 odds on Johnson and Swann is a great double bet.

2 spinners at Adelaide and Sydney would be an option as you dont really need 6 batsmen at those grounds and the spinners traditionally do well there , you would have to drop someone(Collingwood?) and Swann and Monty could do real damage
Also weather today at Brisbane is set at overcast with a chance of rain and pitch is still green
I would go against the grain and bowl first, Anderson would be in his element
Its a huge toss to win

Broad talked about the pitch today and said it wasn't as green as the press were making out and that it was an excellent test wicket. I suspect, given what happened with Nasser in charge, that we will bat first every time in Australia.

What will be interesting is what Australia do if they win the toss. If it is overcast and a bit green I wonder if they will expose their frail batting lineup and bat first?
