"The Athletic" launches in the UK | About to be bought by NYT for $550m (p 32)

For what it's worth I've been a member for a year or so (for their coverage of American sports) and it's excellent. Night and day to newspaper reporting with in depth, well sourced articles. Sam's posted a few things today which have been really good, including a detailed tactical breakdown of our defensive play last season. Theres a free trial period, so you can read a bit yourself before paying anything.

assume you can access The Athletic UK with just a standard Athletic (US) membership, mate?

Bought the annual subscription for £30 today and I'm very satisfied with it already. Really good content and no click bait/adds so far. They've got a fantastic array of writers. My only worry is whether it's financially sustainable.

Yep, you can access all the same stuff (assuming from the UK you can do the same) the homepage is just different. When I log in to the US version baseball and basketball are front and center with the, ahem, soccer, linked elsewhere. The UK version is the opposite, obviously.

I signed up for 3 day trial run last year, and I must say the NBA and NFL coverage is excellent. If you're into that sort of thing, it *could* be a worthwhile subscription.

If the PL coverage is anywhere near as great as the American sports, it could be incredible, but all if they're doing is moving the Mirror, Sun, Mail pieces behind a paywall, then it's a hard pass from me.
Im giving the free trial a go and ive got to be honest Im really impressed so far. At £30 for the first year Im actually quite tempted already.

Posted in another Athletic thread, but I've been a member for some time now for American sports and it's a great product. I think they're going to do even better in the UK also. Sportswriting in America is not great, but the stuff that you guys have (as you all know) is just miles worse. Years ago when I first started reading articles about City transfers online the realization that "oh wow...he literally just made that up" absolutely blew my mind. We obviously have trade rumors and all that here, but if you read something in the paper you know it's at least based on something. The amount of clickbait and bad faith reporting was really crazy to me. Anyway, you guys should all sign up, it's really good.

Just noticed Jack Pitt Brooke has joined them too. Shame as I enjoyed him on the indy football podcast and quite like him given he's a big City fan. Might look into subscribing though as i do quite like the fact they've recruited the some of the best sports writers out there and left the likes of Jamie Jackson behind.

I’ve paid the £30 today for the year. There’s a great article on City and if that’s the standard then it will be worth every penny

I already signed up for £30 for the next 12 months.

I still think £9 a month is too much, so I likely won't renew next August, despite the fact that I follow 3 North American sports closely.
