"The Athletic" launches in the UK | About to be bought by NYT for $550m (p 32)

It has the potential to be great, I had it already for NBA coverage and if they can bring the same kind of things to football then it will be well worth the subscription. The whole premise is that they won't be doing clickbait, they'll be writing more considered in depth pieces as they don't need the clicks, it needs to be good enough to pay for.

Someone somewhere saw there was a market for legit sporting journalism. Personally i think that is fantastic and will be signing up after this post. After raging at papers and their agendas of varying sorts for years i am obligated to do this. If i now moan in the media pages about a Guardian article insinuating oil money, cheats etc when The Athletic exists i have only my own stupid dumb as heck self to blame. I would also expect ridicule from fellow posters and i would deserve it. I clicked on it, i supported that article when i had a viable alternative.

Fair play to the investors who had the balls to give this a go, i really hope it works.

Would never pay for something like this but I can see the gap in the market. Even with having two of the biggest football clubs in the same city, the MEN is utterly clickbaity tripe and imagine its similar with other sides and their local press.

So after this year it be £9:99 a month? If so how they doing it for £30 for the year

I already signed up for £30 for the next 12 months.

I still think £9 a month is too much, so I likely won't renew next August, despite the fact that I follow 3 North American sports closely.
From what I've seen so far, its very often on sale. I paid for a year at the reduced rate, waited for it to go on sale, and did it again. You won't likely pay the list price.

Subscribed earlier today, and have been impressed with it so far. Far better quality of writing than we usually get from the traditional media. Will be interesting to see if their economic model is sustainable, but also how newspapers in this country respond. Will they up their game accordingly, or will they revert to even more clickbait shite?

If they get Martin Samuel I'm signing up for a subscription, it would be great to finally have access to actual interesting and insightful football journalism instead of the lowest common denominator social media rubbish churned out at the moment.

I would too, but I bet he won’t go. I notice he must be the only major football journo without some kind of social media account, would you agree?

I see your point, and I’m tempted, but I’d rather give it a couple of months first, just to see how their City coverage pans out, esp in relation to liverpool and united.

They have poached "the best" sports journalists from the UK. They are paying them much, much more than any of the papers over would pay them. It had best be good and unbiased.
