The Beatles

I like a lot of other bands but IMO nobody came close to what they acheived and without them I dont think a lot of bands would exist, they changed the way nearly everything was done in the popular music business with the power of pure talent.
Their music will live forever just like Beethoven & Mozart no doubt.

On the playing live thing they were superb in 69 on the rooftop, so I wouldnt knock them as a live band.

There's a Beatles bootleg called Unsurpassed Masters. As someone who's been a Beatles collector for nearly 30 years, that just about sums them up for me.

If you really want to know about the Beatles and you've got a spare £250-£300 to burn, you'll need the remastered CD box set, The Beatles Anthology on DVD and these books to kick off with: Ian MacDonald's Revolution In The Head, Mark Lewisohn's Beatles Chronicles, Hunter Davies' authorised biography, The Beatles, and The Beatles Anthology.

Money well spent IMO.

P.S. From here..

Was nothing short of astonishing!

My old man was a make up person (don't ask) in the 60's at EMI and was given a signed white label single every time one came out.

Love the Beatles. As previously said they weren't the hottest live at times but their humour, songwriting and all round skills saw them emerge at the top of the pile.

beatles are great

but 'echoes' era pink floyd pisses all over them.

Never been that big on 'em, but in the last few months I decided to listen to a few of their songs and I'll be honest, you can understand why people make a fuss about 'em. I'm not too overkeen on some of the Hippie/Uber-Left stuff, but the majority of their work is class, whether it I Am The Walrus, Help or Hide Your Love Away. Being a big Oasis fan and knowing the connection just led me back to some of their tracks and I'm glad I did.

Thoughts on The Beatles?

Said this for years, few good songs, apart from that their just OVERATED.

put them in the music scene now and they would be nobodys, they had no competition back then, they don't do anything for me.

I have observed The Beatles from a distance really, never believed the hype at all.Consequently very rarely played their stuff around the house.I purchased a copy of The Beatles Anthology 3 having heard it had a few Demo,s on there; recordings that are in their primitive or original format without any embellishing techniques from the Recording studio wizz kids. What comes through in these recordings is without doubt unbelievable talent, especially Paul Mcartneys vocals as a young apparently untrained kid.Changed my mind totally.Puts todays kids to shame IMO.

Unsurpassed in every way.

Some amazing tunes, but some albums are flooded with fillers. But because of the fillers they learnt how to use new tec' and gear which lead to some top quality songs.

On a side note - who was better solo John or Paul? I'd say John wins hands down.

I think the Beatles's enduring appeal is explained by the diversity of their discography. This means there will always be people who like 3 or 4 of their songs, as it fits in with the genre that the individual likes. Helter Skelter for heavy metal fans, she loves you for pop fans, don't let me down for a rock ballad, lucy in the sky for those who like a bit of psychedelia and so on.
