The Boxing thread

Froch would probably get more money from a Groves rematch on Sky PPV rather than Andre Ward or Stevenson both of whom aren't big ticket sellers and certainly wouldn't be big draws for Froch's supposed last hurrah on the Vegas strip. Ward struggles to sell tickets outside of Oakland and Stevenson with his past polarises opinion and neither of these fighter have fought as the headliner on a PPV, the addition of Froch is hardly likely to make it PPV as outside of hardcore fans in the US and UK boxing fans, he isnt a big name.

aAnyone see Buncey's boxing hour the other day? Groves was saying Froch is avoiding him, but Froch is perusing Stevenson & Ward. Sorry George but if that's true that is hardly avoiding you and I do fee Groves got a raw deal. I don't want to see Froch in either, Stevenson ends brutally for him, and Ward is a one sided beat down. Anyone else think Froch should just retire, it reminds me of the Lennox Lewis situation post Klitchko. He's proved himself, but the young sharks are circling and it's a matter of time for him.

Im not sure how same age as Froch Stevenson who has beaten a bunch of not very good to decent fighters is a young shark circling him. Also I cant remember Ward beating down Froch in there first fight although Ward is better than Froch, just too silky for Froch's style

Well if you can't remember Froch being beaten down by Ward you didn't watch the fight, he may not have knocked him down like Groves but he stood in front of him for 12 rounds winning virtually everyone of them. That to me is a beat down, don't know what your definition of one is. Sharks ( Plural ) doesn't mean Stevenson specifically, I'm referring to Groves, DeGale, maybe GGG if he were to step up and fight Froch. He showed significant signs of aging against Groves, I don't think his style of fighting is healthy if his reflexes are gone. Can see why he wants a Vegas payday though...

No I did watch the fight. All 12 rounds and had Ward as the winner, clear as day. I had it by around 6 rounds, 2 judges had it by 2 and 1 by 8.
For me Froch would beat Stevenson. The punches he took off Groves without being rocked would KO anyone else, groves he beat al be it in weird circumstances, De Gale doesn't even deserve to be on a Froch undercard these days. As for GGG that would be worth seeing but I don't think he could take the shots. Froch may be slowing but as long as he can take shots the way he can he will beat good fighters, saying that for his own health he doesn't need to be fighting to long if he is getting hit in the head a lot

I think Stevenson's fight pulled really good numbers over the weekend. I think with the right marketing that fight would sell. I want to see Stevenson v Kovalev though, but he doesn't seem keen!

-- Wed Dec 04, 2013 7:05 pm --

I thought Froch was rocked quite a few times. The fact he said post fight ''I forgot about that'' when Hearn said he'd never seen Froch down like that before just shows how tough he is. I think at his age, and the fact Stevenson showed he can box a bit he'd be a sitting duck.

Put a good standard card on with good fights and it sells.
Like the US bill sky are showing this weekend. Rigondeaux wouldnt be a huge ticket seller but they have 2 good support fights in the Glen Tapia v James Kirkland fight which looks good. Tapia unbeaten so far looks good his first real major test against a banger in Kirkland. Also on the bill Macklin v Lamar Russ another unbeaten fighter in there first real test. There will be people buying into this PPV.

Sad to read that South African flyweight "Baby Jake" Matlala has died of pneumonia.

He was a WBO Champ in the nineties and fought here a few times IIRC.

Tough bugger and only 4' 10".

RIP Jacob.

Well it seems this weekend was a good 1. A shame for Darren Barker and his hip going on him. A shit way to lose the title. On injury more so than defeat. I think for Barker if he returns for teh fight in the summer it might be he swan song and try and win back the title. Glad he made some bigish money from the fight too been through a lot of stuff in and out of the ring.

Also the fights in the US and the Macklin looked ok in winning his fight and the Kirkland and Tapia fight was a good 1 but Kirkland too strong. As for Rigondeaux class act too good stupid Yank fans leaving before this legend boxes I will never understand.

Kirkland Tapia was a brutal old style fight - fantastic viewing.

Barker made all the right noises before the fight and sure he was unlucky his hip went but I don't put him at Sturm's level anyhow. Nobody who knows his story could fail to warm to the lad but the Geale fight was a once in a lifetime effort from him and even with a clean bill of health he'll never reproduce that night.

Macklin's on the decline but domestic dust ups with Lee and Murray next year should earn him a nice nest egg for retirement.

Darren Barker reminded me of Bute in Nottingham on Saturday, the occasion was way too much for him. Out of him, Macklin, Lee & Murray only Murray has World Title class imo. All four of them should cash in on the hype Sky has been trying to build for over a year now!
