The Boxing thread

Just watched the fight and chuffed for the lad. Well deserved after the bad luck he's had. As has been alluded to, ultimately it may be a blessing in disguise arriving a bit later on the world scene ... A lot of exciting fights to be made.

I was expecting a narrow points loss at the end though Brook showed good patience and composure to finish the fight well on top, very surprised by the Yank judges.

Oh and yes JWIAC !! I'm no more than a casual fight fan but even I knew he was chatting shite all night ... god only knows what he was seeing, you could feel Halling's exasperation at his downbeat offerings to Brooks ascendancy in the bout, growing with each passing round.

Delighted for Kell he was doing all the clean work. I had him up by a round at the end some of the rounds were very scrappy to call. I think that Kell will do extremely well in this division. You look at the 3 main guys in the division Money , Pacman and Marquez all late 30s this is a old talented pool of fighters but with there age there is always going to be a time when they just go and cant preform as before. Kell is in the right place at the moment and will if manged right have a chance to take over from these guys.
His next fight I will be interested to seeing who they put him in against. I think he will take a top 10 ranked fighter next. Then move on to fight say Khan in a big Summer fight in Wembley. They cant do it this year as there is no big indoor arena that will hold it. I also dont think Khan deserves a shot. The way he said after Kells win that Kell can now fight Amir Khan. Khan has avoided Kell and took the easy fight at times but this will all change.
If the tables were turned Khan would never give Brook a shot, he's never been interested in fighting Brook his career would be over with that loss and Brook would be the new poster boy of British boxing. Have a feeling Kell can go on to be one of our best ever, so skilled and the patience he showed in that fight yesterday was remarkable.

Thats the thing now more so than ever Khan needs the Kell fight. He wont get Money fight just yet and a Money fight wont happen for a while depending on how Money gets on Khan would be mad to take on the Money fight straight away Money will more than likely not fight until late 2014 or early 2015 if he wins against Maidana. Kell has the leverage in any deal to be made. Knowing what team Kahn is like they like to do things on the cheap. I remember the lead up to the Paul McCloskey fight and Paul was told either take the fight for x amount or the fight wont happen. Basically Paul was getting more money defending his European title at the stage than compared to the money Team Khan were offering him for a World title fight.
Also Kell has the Sky deal and the PPV options for any potential fight against Khan. Khan wont like coming into a fight and going 50-50 on the split of any PPV numbers with Kell if not a slight bit more for Kell as he is champion. I know if Matchroom are doing it they will want the Kell fight the Hearns made a killing on Groves v Froch they will make a killing on Khan v Brook. Like they would also make a killing on Frampton v Quigg too. Again its about the profile of the fighters Khan has the profile and Brook will too now after this. Like with Frampton and Quigg I would argue Frampton has the bigger profile than Quigg but its what the British public want. I think both fights could well be on next summer if and its a big IF all stay unbeaten and all have big titles in hand. Think Carl has 1 more fight with Boxnation and then he will be a free agent and able to do a deal to fight on Sky if need be. So Carls has Kiko and 1 more fight then free agent and possible fight summer v Quigg on the co PPV with Khan v Brook. Huge numbers biggest PPV for UK.

I actually had Kell 4 rounds up but was still biting my nails going to decision over in America.

Had it Kell take 5 of the last 6 with Porter only taking the 12th. Jim Watt is shite, Paulie Malignaggi is great besides its shitty whiney accent.

Despite the macho talk from both Brook & Khan post-fight, I would be very surprised to see this fight happen very soon, despite it being a big draw.

Brook has just won the title, and I cannot see Hearn putting him in with Khan as early as December (providing Khan doesn't agree on Guerrero). Hearm will, sensibly may I add, what someone a little easier for Kell to defend against. Even the slightest chance of him losing his title on his first defence will have Hearn worried. I imagine he might get someone in like Bundu or even lower down the IBF rankings and let Kell get a solid defence under his belt. Then he will look at rolling out the mega fights from Spring 2015 onwards. Khan, Bradley etc.

Alexander could be an option, certainly a little risky, but I can't see Brook losing to him on home soil personally.

A decent retainer fight in December, a tasty fight in Spring 2015 and then a mega fight in Summer 2015, perhaps against Khan if he doesn't get his wish against Mayweather.

I'd absolutely piss myself if Brook gets a shot with Mayweather in the Summer, merely to see the look on Khan's face!

Watt always seems far too obsessed with who is coming forwards, completely ignoring how scrappy that fighters work is. Porter barely through a clean punch in the second half of the fight and seemed more keen on charging in head first and trying to get a good hug than actually land anything meaningful, but he was coming forwards so that means he's bossing it in Watt's eyes.

Not a great fight to watch, but I thought Kell was the only one even trying to land good shots and he was quitely dominating by the 6th or 7th. I'm surprised Porter has much of a fanbase, his style is very unappealing.

I wouldn't bother trying to get a fight with Khan, I honestly don't think he has done anything to deserve it. It would get a lot of interest in England, but I don't see what Brook gains by beating him other than a decent pile of cash. They are pretty much the opposite of each other in terms of career path, Kell has earnt everything he has while Khan just gets handed opportunity after opportunity. I suppose if they fought then Kell could put the last nail in Khan's coffin and get him out of the way of the big fights in the division (which Khan's name bizarrely get banded around with)

Regarding Jim Watt yes he is a shocker no doubting it. Saying that his card and what he was saying was in a way right. Normally the fighter going forward normaly wins the rounds in the US even if they are wild and not landing a lot. Saying that Kell in his last few rounds was the one going forward. So deserved the win.

Next fight for Kell look at the fighters ranked highly in the IBF Dan Ion and Leonarf Bundu and even Frankie Gavin are all ranked highly by the IBF and Kell can beat all. Gavin was beaten by Bundu recently but Bundu is a aging pushing the 40 mark but he has beaten Gavin and Lee Purdy in fights in the UK so far could well be a easy fight made. or Dan Ion who has been fighting out of Canada and the US in recent years so any of those 3 could well be a winable fight for Kell and a not too hard fight to take.

I know that there will be lots of media attention around Kell now just hope Sky and Matchroom keep him on normal Sky for the time being. He will end up taking over the Froch PPV nights when Froch retires but hopefully it isnt for some time yet.

even early in the fight Porters 'work' was just windmilling, he looks like hes never had a boxing lesson, tbh Brook deserves loads of credit in the fact that im certain he wont have a more awkward fight ever, thought 2-1 for brook was a gr8 price although i never thought he's get a pts decision over there, oh and yeah jim watt is an awful pundit, does he ever get the winner right when it goes to pts?

Anyone seen that Johnny Nelson is pretty much calling out Marco Huck for a fight? Huck isn't all that, but Nelson is surely deluding himself if he thinks this is a good idea. He's 47 ffs and retired a decade ago, surely someone will have to talk some sense into him? It's a shame to see him getting dragged into this sort of thing tbh as I find him pretty likeable on the Sky coverage, it's a bit sad to see his ego dragging him back into something he really shouldn't be doing.

Watt is such a poor excuse for a commentator. No idea how he got the job.

He was asked about the fight. Said he needs 6 months but thinks he could spark out Huck. I dont know I think at his age and so long out of the gym its a hugh risk even if he was to go sparring against the elite for say 3 months and see how stronger they are now and take it from there. IF not I would hope he would see sense and stay retired. He is a highlight of the Sky coverage.

Also good luck to Carl The Jackal Frampton this weekend in his World Title fight with Kiko beaten Kiko once by KO hopefully same result this lad from the first day I seen him sparring I always had thought he would go on and be a World Champion just too good and powerful not be a World Champion and fighting in Belfast I hope its going to be a Frampton win setting up big unification fights with Leo Santa Cruz and then Rigondeaux.
