The Boxing thread

Definitely. Prize fighter alright as a UK domestic watch but Super 6 should be mandatory every 4 years like an Olympics IMO
I think there could be serious money in that if it became a regular thing, boxing fans wouldn't mind paying for that at all even the cheapskates. The view-counts and advertisement money alone would make it worth while.

I think the super six did't really get too much attention to the final, the top 3/4 title holders fighting each other other 18/24 months would be good, but 6 would be too many.

I thought it created a nice buzz in boxing at the time, it might have passed some people by but if it was a regular thing it would grow in popularity surely and be something people look forward to, also 4 is not much of a "tournament" imo. It's a chance for maybe a decent but unproven talent to steal the limelight that's exciting to me.

If you got the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO champions in a semi final and final format with an open draw March and September every few years it would be a good competition for lineal and undisputed champ combined without taking too long and isolating any up a coming fighters. The sanctioning bodies would never agree though.

Yeah I doubt a lot of promoters would want a super 6 style tournament very often either the way things are these days.

Anyone know what time the Ward ring walk is expected to be tonight/this morning? What kind of fight are we expecting?

Also any info on which Olympic boxing matches will be worth watching wouldn't go a miss.

Wards due in the ring 10:30 Oakland time. Not sure what the time difference is to here.

No doubt Krusher will be sat ringside.

Think this was always going to be a low risk fight and more a loosener for the big one. I'm sure Ward will be happy with the rnds. Can he be beat Kovalev? maybe. Wards an intelligent fighter, i reckon he'd need to stick behind his jab and pinch the rnds, he's got the ability to switch and will try and smoother Krusher's work, frustrate him and maybe win ugly. That said, keeping him away for 12rnds won't be easy, and once he lets his hands go he's dangerous. Wards got a decent chin, sure only Darnell Broone has put him down previously. Kovalev win for me though think he'll be to strong.

Apologies for bold txt, this fecking phone.

Ricky Hatton sending some worrying Twitter messages last night. He looks a mess and needs to sort himself out.

I dont dislike Quigg I never said i disliked him. I think he got a lot of things going to him. He was handed the World title well the Regular WBA title. As it was a draw with Salinas then he was in with 4 nobodies then boxed Kiko and got the Frampton fight in doing so ended up being proper WBA Champion as Rigo got stripped meaning there was 2 Proper world titles on the line. Got beaten in his own back yard after doing fuck all in his biggest fight so far. Now he has bitter grapes towards Frampton.
Yet he and his team will build him up slowly again. He shouldnt need to be built up slowly again. Already there is a big fight waiting for him if he and his team want it in the Kid Galahad fight. Kids on the under card i think of the Kell Brook fight. Kid wants to fight Quigg but i dont think Hearn or Joe Gallagher will put Quigg in with Kid. Kids a good boxer out for a while but he is back and thats a big UK fight for Quigg to have as a comeback fight or a fight early next year. Also as i said before Jamie McDonald if he moves up would be another easy good fight to make for Quigg. I just dont think there will be much of a rush in getting those fights made on Quiggs team part.
Eddie Hearn will always big up a rematch of a Frampton fight on PPV. Saying that if Frampton v Selby is made that should and could well be PPV standard more so than any other fight out there for both Frampton and Selby. It would make for a proper good fight 2 great boxers a real 50-50 fight.

Doesn't look as though he's too bothered by not getting the decision.

"This weight category is not for me. I need to move up," added Barnes, Ireland's flag bearer at Friday's opening ceremony.

"The fight could have gone either way but I'm actually glad he got it because there is no way I could have had the energy to fight another fight at this weight. It's just as well he won."

Paddy got to the Olympics 18 months ago. He is a great boxer but there was absolutely no zip as before. He hasnt been fighting great but I still thought he was good enough to medal biggest disappointment for me. I had him winning it that last round I thought he done enough to get it. I had Ireland boxing team to win 3 goal medals. Kaite Taylor , Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon but now Paddy is gone and Michael O Reilly more than likely out before he starts its looking a lot harder here in my bet. Still think who is left in it for Ireland can all do well and medal just gutted for Paddy. Think he will turn pro at 29 he should be looking at that now as he might not make it to another Olympics final as at 33 be even harder with the talent coming along behind him to keep going. Brendan Irvine is going to do big things might medal here. Also Joe Ward to medal if he is on form. This Irish team should be looking at bringing back the most medals of any olympics team I rate them all that highly.

That was never a knockdown by Savon in the first round there, glanced over the top and then he levered him down with his arm but the commentators refused to correct themselves for some reason though? Doesn't make as much of difference in points to be fair since he lost that round anyway.

Thought Josh Kelly looked impressive last night never seen him box before that i can remember.

Think Fowler will turn pro soon and his style will be a bit more suited to the pro game.

Also felt like Okolie gave a really good account himself, just his 27th amateur fight and held his own against a quality opponent and probable gold medalist

Yeah I am liking some of the boxers i seen so far. The Joe Cordina fight with the Uzbeki fighter was a good fight. Cordina was never really in the fight. Some good fighters from Team GB and Ireland will turn pro after the games. Paddy Barnes will and Michael Conlan should too and the GB fighters think the majority will turn over Pro.

Jesus some shocking scoring at the Olympics so far. Joe Ward got beaten tonight against a sloppy fighter who was wind milling like no ones business also hitting when on a break and Ward got 2 public warnings daft decision. Our Irish and Uk boxing teams are getting fuck all this Olympics so far.

Yeah been some poor decision's. Despite Barnes weight issue he still won that fight for me, but it was close. It's the ones that make you wonder what fight the judges we're watching. Sadly we still get this at pro level. Must be heart breaking putting all that graft in, only for the scoring to be shite.
