The Boxing thread

We were having a debate down in the gym last night about the quality of Olympic boxing now pretty much everyone agreed its crap. I know the old system got played by frauds like Audley but now its just really scrappy, and I sort of understand how the judges are struggling to score the fights.

I think they should bring back the scoring points as punches that landed you knew were you stood. I feel for Joe Ward I do and Paddy Barnes both beaten by Split Decision and could of went there way. The judges and the score cards are a bit iffy for my liking. if it was a case of the old systen 3 of the 5 judges had to press a button to award a point nothing wrong with that in my eyes. Sadly now a sloppy fighter who can spoil gets a nod over the natural boxer in Ward it doesnt seem that way to be a good thing for Am boxing but thats how it goes now.

Ell I truely dont think the standard is bad they just need to bring back the old system or score scoring shots they dont seem to score body punches anymore or the never have. Some of the better talent are still to fight Michael Conlon will go onto being 1 of the best ams out there to turn pro from this Olympics I truely hope he wins the Gold. Also we got a talented Brendan Irvine to come also from a Irish point of view this guy only 20 I think he has gone deep and has won medals all the way up the age groups the guy is a talent. Now I wont say he is as good as Paddy Barnes or Michael Conlon but they had to keep Barnes and Irvine at different weights as they were both always going to go to Rio and be contending. Sadly not for Paddy.

The British guys would be the same too some true talent out there and its a join to see all the ams fighting these guys could well go onto to win World titles like James DeGale and AJ.

Stephen Donnelly is buzzing about the win. He has to fight the favourite next hopefully he can have the fight of his life and get the win then its a garanteed Bronze medal. The guy was going to retire not too long ago. Now 1 fight away from winning a medal.

Katie Taylor out on a split decision. Thats the 3rd or 4th Irish fighter to go out on a split decison. These judges are scoring almost like pro fights now. I think the older system was best with the punch per point system but thats Olympic boxing for you this year.

Any British fighters left after the Conlan fight they would want to be going out and looking for a KO its thats bad the judges are just a nightmare. Conlan was in bits after it he was robbed his chance to win the gold medal. I know Russia got a load of athletes banned could it be they are paying off the judges to get fighters through to the next rounds. Also the guy that beat Conlan last time he boxed he got through on a questionable decision again. Now he is at the least the Bronze medalist.

Colon got ripped off by those bullshit judges
He let the fuckers know it as well ,good on ya fella .
Them Russians must AV got to their water.
He pulled no punches (see what I did there, eh?) in his post bout interview;

He's got a pretty strong Belfast accent so you need to listen carefully, but he let rip with both barrels!

Was that a tattoo of a chain around his neck? If so he deserved to lose.

I've given up on Olympic boxing. Those judges who screwed that kid over should be banned. But they still wouldn't reverse the decision anyway!

In the next fight a American fighter got robbed too. The judging at this is the worst there ever has been at a games. They should keep it to points for punches have 5 judges 3 hit a button you score back then it wasnt as bad as it is now.

Some crap reffing aswell as judging. Anyone see the third round of the Buatsi fight last night? Lost track of how many times the ref gave the other lad a warning for holding, literally had no intention of boxing, yet never deducted a point.

And in theJoyce fight after, clear as day knockdown not given

The old system made it more exciting and you could see which shots the judges we're scoring. I'd also bring head guards back at this level, 'try' and reduce the risk of head clashes. It's a long road for all boxers who may not get another shot at a medal. Obviously boxers can get bust up regardless, but harm reduction is good and maybe prolong decent fights that may otherwise been stopped. Just my opinion of course.

Errol Spence fights Leonard Bundu live on boxnation at the weekend. Really impressed with Spence so far, he looks the part.

Loads of bits and pieces about the ams the guy that beat Conlan is not fighting his semi final now which is a given he got beaten up in his last 2 fights. The rules should be looked at. The scoring is bent. There was a Irish judge on the radio yesterday who was offered a bribe in offered fancy watches and stuff to push buttons when it was computerised to go for a certain fighter. He want to the amatur boxing officals about these claims and he has since been barred from judging any fights since. They also claimed he was destrutive while judging when 1 judge gave a fight to 1 fighter who was totally dominated by the other. Its bent to fuck. I am glad in a way its been brought up and highlighted in the hope that it turns things around and that the scoring will revert back to points per shot.
Also hear the the Russians since the change in the score system are getting there fighters to spoil more and more and walk forward as they are being scored more than cleaner shots if they get in close and throw some punches its the way they are going. Also some judges got banned from the Olympics. As for Mick Conlan and Paddy Barnes expect them to be signed up by Matchroom. There back in Belfast soon with Ryan Burnett they can build up the fighters and get a huge crowds in with the Belfast guys in Barnes , Conlan and even big Tommy McCarthy too to be on Burnetts under cards then the others will hopefully sell out big shows themself. Irish boxing is about to go boom in the pro ranks.

Saturday night.. (Sky Box Office)

GGG v Kell Brook
John Riel Casimero v Charlie Edwards
Lee Haskins v Stuart Hall
Martin J Ward v Andy Townsend
Craig Richards v Dalton Miller

Connor Benn also on the bill.

Kell looks in good shape, be interesting to see his game plan for this. Can't see any problems for GGG great shot variety and digs hard. You can't not but like the bloke.
Haskins and Hall should be a decent fight, LH should have to much even tho Hall's a tough kid.

Looking forward to the Casimero Edwards fight the only problem is I'll have to mute the telly because Edwards drives me crackers with those daft amateur style noises he makes when throwing his shots.
