The British Monarchy

Speaking as an Englishman mate it's just the pomp and ceremony, I can't speak for all English people but that's about the long and the short of it.

It's the House Of Lords that gets my Goat if I am honest.
Something that should be a matter of ridicule for each and every one of us.
The House of Lords is an embarrassment to the nation

Normally I'm happy, to vote I mean, and I don't want to be completely wrong, or, completely right, so I went for indifferent, I'm not actually indifferent, how can a person be indifferent about anything? i care about stuff, but essentially I don't know, "I don't know" should've been an option, that's what I think anyway

Are you sure?…

What puzzles me is that Catholics get all worked up about a protestant having to be a protestant to be monarch when the Pope is definitely a Catholic and he was/is King of Kings in regards to Catholic countries.

Kings are chosen by God (Or so they say) and the Pope was the main guy dishing out the crowns and land.
Pope has no part in the constitution of the Rep of Ire.
What’s your point?

If you want the Monarch of England to be the head of the Church of England, knock yourselves out.

I’m not sure if the difference in our arguments is genuinely going over your head.

It the separation of state and religion, no matter what the country.

You do know we only abolished it because we'd over farmed our plantations in the caribean so the slaves weren't as much use to us anymore? Was also a good excuse to attack and rob loads of Spanish ships, something we were really good at. It wasn't altruism. If the British Empire had been altruistic it would never have become as powerful as it was.

When you dive into British history it's incredible how often things that sound great or are lauded came about because of incredible cruelty.

The Lancashire cotton industry, for example, emerged because The East India Company wiped out 30% of the polulation of Bengal in the 1769 famine by increasing tax from 15% to 40% over the previous 5 years and then deciding that the traditional way Mughal rulers had of dealing with famine (forgoing taxes and providing food to the poor) was unnecessary and instead raised tax to 60% and started violently enforcing tax collection.

With so much of the cotton workers in Bengal dead or migrated away, the EIC decided it would be better to ship all the raw cotton back to England and the cotton industry takes off.

To add insult to injury the EIC then essentially wiped out the trade in Bengal by forcing all cotton farmers to export their raw cotton instead of selling to indian weavers and then made Indians buy their own cotton back as textiles from England.

An interesting perspective I’d never acknowledged.

It’s quite similar to my sentiments on it. Admittedly part of it is lucking out on who the monarch is, but I do think stability and a focus on longer term thinking that they are able to do does help, particularly in the absence of having governments that could think longer than just their term.

Yes I do know that, thanks for educating us all on what we already knew, what’s your take on 30 mill slaves in the world today, qatar? you omitted to comment on that? my point is simple, SICK of being preached too - and ‘your’ preaching!- We need to be proud not pulling ourselves apart, if people don’t like it here - see ya.
Ah right, because it looked to me like you thought we'd sacked off slavery because we were lovely fluffy people who did it out of the goodness of our own hearts. As for 'my' preaching, i don't remember us ever having a conversation before.
