The British Monarchy

I sense some people getting heated about certain aspects of the debate in here, but personally I think by and large the discussions and the various viewpoints of constitution, religion and history are very interesting and for the most part, informative, in one way or another.

I particularly like hearing the British version of history as I would be the first to admit that the school version I learned in my early years was very subjective from an Irish point of view.
Having said that, I would say it is also evident that we studied stuff that was probably a footnote in the British version.

I’ve tried in my later years to revise history on these islands more objectively and opinions expressed in here are very interesting, from my perspective.

I’m indifferent to them. They neither offend or anger me nor do I actively like them or hold them to high regard.

But having read this week that they cost the equivalent of £1.50 per person per year to bring in £1.8bn to the British economy, it’s a no brainier to keep them to be honest. And they don’t even really cost that to us because every single penny of our taxes go straight to the country’s deficit, every year, forever more. Whenever you hear anyone say the words “taxpayers money…” being spent on something the disagree with, they’re making it up.

I couldn’t think of anything worse than being in the Monarchy. They live in Castles and Palaces, they have teams of butlers, bodyguards, top chefs, drivers etc. working for them and probably don’t even wipe their own arses. But their lives are like The Truman Show. All they’re for these days it to be used for the benefit of the economy. If they’re happy to live like that then let’s keep them at it. Personally, I couldn’t think of a life I’d enjoy much less than living in the public eye for my entire life like them.

Pope has no part in the constitution of the Rep of Ire.
What’s your point?

If you want the Monarch of England to be the head of the Church of England, knock yourselves out.

I’m not sure if the difference in our arguments is genuinely going over your head.

It the separation of state and religion, no matter what the country.

You don't want a monarchy, that's your choice. We will take your suggestions under advice and revisit the issue in say another 100 years?

Because you don't like the monarchy isn't enough of a reason for us to remove it is it?

The monarchy has no bearing on my personal day to day life whether it was still going or not. I would be no better off if it were to go than i would if it carries on.

The fact is the vast majority of people find it interesting at some point in their life. It is why the likes of The Crown, Bridgerton and Downton Abbey are some of the most watched TV programmes ever (I'm aware the last two aren't royal as such but part of the whole pompus aura) and it is why those who want it gone know so much about it's history.

There is not many things still present in 2022 that have such a detailed history as the British Monarchy but it still has a place in modern society.

Society now for the younger generation is getting more and more disrespectful.

I'd much rather my kids take inspiration from the Royals such as William, Harry and how they act etc rather than the latest Z lister selling teeth whitener on Instagram if it was a choice between the two. (Yes i am aware i am taking the two extremes ends of the examples)

I just don't get the personal reasons why people want it gone? How does it effect you on a day to day basis? Are you envious of their life? Because i'm not, i couldn't think of anything worse than to be a member of the royal family. Unless it affects you (and i'm really interested in how) then just get on with life.

Statistically he speaks for a minority of people.

How’s it patently untrue to say he doesn’t speak for Manchester?

It’s obvious he doesn’t.

Every person I know in person, monarchists or not, liked the Queen and has been sad.

He called her “an evil coloniser” and accused her of shielding Andrew, both are blatant blatant lies.

She’s the opposite of a coloniser, the Empire ended under her reign and the Commonwealth replaced it.

She’s done loads for charity in former colonies around the world.
Tell me about all this marvellous charity work that the richest woman in the world has done

To be fair you shouldn't have expected an intelligent response from someone who thinks Britain's role in transatlantic slavery should not get brought up because "we didn't start it" and thinks we abolished slavery, when in fact Britain was one of the last Colonial powers to abolish slavery because we still had 9 million slaves in British India until 1861.
If people want to be proud of the strength and power that the British Empire had, arguably the strongest in human history, that's fine, i just prefer it if that pride isn't based on some ridiculous notion that we were also 'really nice'. We weren't. You don't get that much power by being nice, you get it by being ruthless.

I never suggested you remove the monarchy. Where are you getting that from.
I see it as your choice, nothing to do with anyone outside Britain.

Any discussion I’ve had about the monarchy in here has revolved around the separation of state and religion.
It is an issue in your kingdom whether you think so or not.

I’m sure you could keep the monarchy and revise your constitution at the same time.

At the end of the day it’s for Britain to decide.

You are correct however that I would not be in favour of having a monarchy here. We are still living with the consequences of trying to separate ourselves from it though.
