The Conservative Party

Something to think about. It takes 54 letters of no confidence to the Chair of the 1922 committee to trigger a vote of no confidence in Johnson. What does it tell you that over 300 Tory MPs know what he is like but still want him in charge??
It's inertia aka frightened rabbits. They have to make a decision for themselves instead of just waiting for a division bell to go.

That they don’t have enough to beat him in said leadership contest at the moment and don’t want to give him a year without the ability to trigger another one?

I strongly suspect that some are going to be really startled if the local elections go really badly for them
Surely that should be when.

Unless something dramatic happens, I imagine it's going to be carnage. We'll have a taster on March 3rd when the by-election is held in Birmingham Erdington.

The sad thing about local elections, and this one probably more so, is that many people use them to vent their spleen on national issues. Not having had a chance to vote for so long, I reckon many will seize the opportunity to plunge the knife in deep. Cue the obligatory speeches: " No, it's not been a good night for the party. And what is especially disappointing is that so many good Conservative councilors have lost their positions..."

We'll then have Conservative MPs returning to their local branches to get it in the ear, from those that have suffered through little fault of their own, and to be told that the great white hope is now a great white elephant.

Sir John Major just made a speech about democratic integrity with a thinly veiled attack on his party. Reading between the lines he called them nationalist and had digs at the cabinets constant lying aided by the PM, and Raabs attacks on the independence of the judiciary.

Nice balance on beebs Politics Live, 4 Tories v 1 Green Party, totally ignoring John Major.

That’s a fair point.

I think they are a bit torn. Yes he’s an idiot - he’s done plenty wrong and some stuff right - but here is also the guy they see that tore down the red wall - and was seen to cut across political tribalism as London mayor. So they see him as an asset in that regard. My guess is they are waiting for the may elections and if the Tories flop he’s done for, if they don’t then the Tory MPs will think voters aren’t really politically engaged or give a shit enough for his many flaws to actually matter.

Where I would pay credit is to those that have spoken out against Johnson - principles above their political career - that’s where I would be looking for my next leader if I was a card carrying Tory and had a say in the matter.
