The Conservative Party

Drilling is funded by the oil exploration companies that pay a licence fee to the U.K. government than deduct their drilling costs to offset their tax bill.

If Scotland gains independence the oil/gas exploration companies would ultimately need to come to a new arrangement with the Scottish government.
And the UK government will need to be at least compensated for the tune of at least £billions.

Why?
It’s more likely that the U.K. government would need to hand over a pro-rata amount of the licence fee based on the duration of the licence and how long is left at the date of independence.

Just one example, the UK government invested £16bn on future projects to help North Sea extraction companies.

Do you think Westminster just lets them keep it for the sake of good will?

The relevance is you’re saying the same stuff the Brexit campaign did.

“We can be (this country), we can be (that country)”

Comparing countries that haven’t had decades wrapped within a union is stupid.

Just as comparing splitting a country in two, then comparing what’s left, with countries of a similar population is.

We know the UK government gives more to Scotland in public spending than they give to the UK government in the first place.

There will be a huge black hole come independence.

Ahh a Daily Mail reader .... Scotland has given much more in oil , gas and power to England than it has ever received in 'hand outs''

Scotland on its own will be better without the Tories.

Ahh resorting to personal attacks because you’re losing the argument.

No it hasn’t and even if it had, that’s not the point.

The point is they are currently operating as a net taker from the UK coffers, that’s a serious problem should they go independent, as it means they cannot fund the public services they have now… which need more investment than they get now.

Scotland, England, Wales and NI won’t have to deal with the Tories very soon, other than listening to them complain from across the dispatch box.

No it didn’t. The £16 billion you speak of, presumably the North Sea transition deal, is the combined investment of the government and oil/gas companies to transition from oil/gas to renewables, £10 billion of which relates to Hydrogen production, £3 billion for carbon capture projects and £3 billion for replacing existing fossil fuel production with renewables. So it is a long way from the government investing £16 billion in oil / gas extraction.
