Thing is the architects of austerity shat on the doorstep then ran away for others to carry the can - they were followed by a group who were in the thrall of Tufton St and starved public institutions of cash so they rich donors could get even richer but inevitably this was the final destination for austerity - dangerous game of pass the parcel the music stops and these cunts were holding the parcel........ all the other players just stood up and walked away

A modern army has no need for a mass of unskilled conscripts, most of whom would have no desire whatever to be there.

That's apart from the fact that a) It would be an utterly pointless increase in public expenditure and b) it removes from the workforce (at a time when we are short of workers!) some of the youngest, fittest and most moderately paid workers, thereby damaging productivity and increasing industry costs.

This is just red meat for red-faced bigots, the majority of whom, ironically, escaped conscription themselves.
