The Conservative Party

Fucking hell, this is like Baconface having to wheel out Paul Scholes because everyone else he's tried to bring in has been shit.

Well at least we have someone a bit more sensible as foreign secretary than previous names such as Truss and Johnson, that’s one small crumb of comfort on this zombie clusterfuck of a government. Shows how desperate things are on a cabinet reshuffle there is no one left to bring in out of the brexit banging weirdos that have been on the ministerial merry go round since 2019s election.

We now have two remain backers sat in the two most important offices in the country in Hunt and Cameron. At least as a public we only have one more year of putting up with this shit.

Wonder if Camerons views on the Palestinians living in a prison camp and under occupation will have changed from today?

The subtle genius of the Tories’ strategy is that somehow whenever they take action on something they are “the only ones who can look after the economy.” Or “the only ones who will stop the boats.”

But when they fuck up. When they bungle COVID and hundreds of thousands die. Or when they have MPs repeatedly suspended for sexual misdemeanours. Or when they tell poor people they just need to budget better. Or when they bung billions in contracts to their best mates…

Then all of a sudden it is all politicians that are the problem. “Don’t expect any of the other lot to be any better.” People say, as if it is some truism that doesn’t need to be proven and makes them sound like some wise sage.

It’s fatuous bollocks is what it is. Yes the Labour Party would be more moral (and probably more competent) than this Tory government. So would the Lib Dems. So would the SNP. So would the Greens. So would a Tory government from 30 years ago.

People talk utter bollocks. This lot are cunts. Not all politicians. This very specific lot. And I will open a bottle of champagne the day they are fucked off for the good of this country.

Nothing winds me up more than this when it comes to politics. It's universally used by Tory voters who realise they've been had but don't want to admit it. The equivalent of united fans saying they're no longer interested in football because it's all about money.

This set of chancers and their actions right now remind me of all the meaningless substitutions made at half time in a preseason friendly where the 4th choice goalkeeper ends up being captain.

Except it’s more like a testimonial because for some inexplicable reason they’ve given 30 minutes to the team captain that retired 7 years ago.

Well said. This utter fucking nonsense is repeated as nauseam. Just read it on the Braverman thread I think.

Why are people so fucking stupid?

because that stupidity is carefully nurtured by the partisan press/media barons. murdoch and the dmg are all that is needed to keep the 40% of the electorate from voting. Apathy and "safe seats" does the rest. Unless a co-allition is formed by "anyone but them cunts", the same situation will recur. It took two world wars to expose the incompetence and naked greed that sustains the tory party, this time the sheer criminality of them might do it. The decline of newsprint as the sole medium of debate has been needed since murdoch torched "reporting" and replaced it with propaganda, his hatred of democracy is pathological

These are not my words but they sum up our current political situation very well:

"Why is it do hard to convince people they've been fooled?

It only seems hard to convince people they’ve been fooled.

In fact, most of the time you don’t have to convince them, because they already know.

What’s really, really, really difficult is getting them to openly admit being fooled, because it’s enormously, staggeringly, unbelievably humiliating.

If it hasn’t happened to you, you almost certainly have no idea just how humiliating it is.

It’s worse than admitting you just pissed yourself in public.

Much worse.

For many, it’s less humiliating to lie — by continuing to insist that they haven’t been fooled — than admit that they have been fooled.

That’s why it seems so hard to convince people they’ve been fooled: you’re not actually trying to convince them they’ve fooled. They already know they’ve been fooled. What you’re actually trying to do — whether you know it or not — is get them to admit it…

…And for some, that’s too intolerable. It’s never going to happen."

Since work started on cognitive biases in the 70s and then mutated into behavioural economics and now neuroeconomics, the number of documented/studied ways in which we act 'irrationally' is close to 200 I think. What's scary about this is the element of research and application that is undertaken with a view to manipulating us. We've moved beyond the stage of shrewd politicians or chancers tapping into these things in an ad hoc fashion, to systematic and targeted exploitation of these biases for nefarious ends.

When I was a student a long time ago, I used to think the psychology students were dossers doing a pretend subject. These days I'm inclined to think it should probably be a mandatory part of the school curriculum.

It's silly to judge politics in the lens of rationality because there is nothing rational in politics and the judgement of irrationality is a point of view after all. Nobody could rationalise whether to vote Brexit for example because the answer depended completely on your point of view and what matters to you.

Manipulation is an age-old tactic in politics but at the end of the day it's extremely easy to manipulate a left-leaning voter to vote for left-leaning things. If someone is prejudiced against immigration, then anyone with anti-immigration policies is probably going to win them over. Manipulation or appeal to those in the centre whose views vary considerably is how elections are won or lost.

The only people really questioning people's behaviour are those on the hard-left, or fanatics who have always held a view that they're far superior to everyone else. They believe that elections are actually really simple, the stupids just need to stop reading certain newspapers and finally come round to their senses and vote accordingly.

Disagree with much of that but my point really was about the fact that we are moving into an era where the age old tactics of manipulation are becoming ever more sophisticated and we as citizens/society aren't keeping up with these developments which to me can't be good for democracy.

Is Francois mental? I am sure that foreign powers have ways and means but does he really expect all military movement, disposition and readiness to be publicly discussed in the Commons?

I remember arguing with a good friend many years ago and him as we often did and him saying to me “it’s impossible to win an argument with you” My reply was “you've won a lot of arguments with me I just never told you , not having you gloating;)” His reply , yes me too.
