Private care homes shut down for safety
Research from Oxford University highlights that 98% of adult care homes closed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) between 2011 and 2023 were privately operated. Similarly, over 90% of children's homes shut down by Ofsted during the same period were also for-profit.
Anders Bach Mortensen, who led the study, explained: "The strongest regulatory measure available to the CQC and Ofsted is far more likely in for-profit provision." The report indicates that the trend of outsourcing care has resulted in a disproportionate number of closures due to serious breaches of standards, with significant implications for vulnerable residents. Ben Goodair, a co-author, noted that forced closures often reflect severe neglect or abuse, leading to substantial costs for local authorities. The study also reveals a concerning concentration of care homes in affluent areas, leaving deprived localities underserved.
