The game is off

yeah it was pretty amateur, mcfc twitter didnt say anything either. we were ok tho someone told us.

to those wondering why it was PP'd its because the vast majority of fans would of had serious problems getting there, lots of roads were blocked off, and it was plain dangerous. Lots of trees and lorries blowing over.

The problem 90% would have set of already, and at least half would be very close when it was called off. As the weather is meant to get better about 10 bells it may have been as well to play it.

Got there at half-past 6 and we were there when the police were notified via walkie-talkie. There was a queue outside the South Stand entrances and there was a suspicion that they were keeping the ground shut due to an imminent announcement and it came practically a minute after we got there. The bus stop outside that end of the ground has been torn apart by the weather, the boards all over the path with one of the poles swinging all over the place. Phoned home as soon as the police told us and 5 minutes later Sky were reporting it after Vinnie tweeted it. Got home at about 5 past 8.

Ideally it would have been called off at around 5-ish, but you can't blame them for keeping the decision as late as possible. At least they didn't leave it till after 7.

Please save us from daft self-centred "it's a disgrace" rants. I know it's England, and it has to be someone's fault, but sometimes these things just happen. If someone had died the exact same people would have been calling it 'a disgrace' to have gone ahead.

Bang on. The Everton game was called off because apparently the tile from a roof on the way there were getting damaged blown into the street by the winds.

Can you imagine the absolute uproar from people if they knew this was happening, let the game go ahead, and somebody got injured?

The GMP and Safety Officer did their jobs tonight, which was to call of the game when they couldn't guarantee the safety of all the attendees. The lateness of the decision is because wind speed and impact on such a local scale are almost impossible to predict and they wanted to give the game every opportunity to go ahead. 1 hour before the game is when most games get called off for this type of thing, and we were ahead of Everton by 15 minutes. I don't presume their Safety Officer is "getting the sack" either.

Some really ridiculous opinions on here at times.

Couldn't go tonight, so my lad was going with two of his mates, they turned back at Lime St because it was very windy, and the trains seemed to be in disarray - glad he decided then rather than getting to warrington to hear the match was off. I think they should have made the call sooner....
My lad and his mate from uni were at Lime st. He told me there was a train at 6.30 but it might only get to Manchester around 8pm. They decided not to bother, although he did say they would have got in a taxi if it had been the Barcelona game.

the worst motorway conditions i have ever seen and ive been driving 30 years, wagons on there side and at one point the wind lifted the front of our car off the road

sorry .... if you think strong winds can't enter an open-top area stadium, then you are a bit thick, in my informed opinion.
Fucking brilliant. Someone at home is arguing with someone in the stadium over whether it's windy in the stadium. Can't beat Bluemoon at times.

Maybe he hasn't got a roof

not arguing that its windy in the stadium at the moment, but if the winds got worse then it would affect things within the stadium if the game went ahead, hence one of the reasons, why the game was called off.

it was common sense to decide not to go myself tonight because of the forecast earlier in the day.

Lol sorry man its not but im working nights so my heads up my ass most of the time was he not sent off last week?! lol just want the easiest game possible.lol

No good for our injured players and safe for us. It's a nightmare out there. Someone will be killed on the roads. It's only football. Fuck it.

It's just annoying it was left so late that's all
Fair enough. Silly that given the warnings all the day that the police didn't call it sooner

Yes, the red weather warning for the North-west was announced late morning, I did think it might be called off then but once it wasn't I assumed it wasn't that bad in Manc. Oh well, better than anyone getting seriously hurt.

Conditions inside the stadium had nothing to do with the decision. If it did, Stoke would never have a home game.

I presume you didn't go to Everton when it was minus seven degrees celcius and Fulham when it snowed then?

my wheelchair doesnt have 4WD for the snow lol

Just got back to wigan now, traffic shit but look at the bright side, the big guns will be back for rearranged fixture plus extra rest before cup games, timing was a shitter but hey, I was at a match against ipswich at maine road bout 93/94 ish and that called ofg at half time while we were 2 nil up

Fair enough, you are excused. ;-) Just pointing out that it wasn't stupid to go to the game tonight in expectation that there would be a match. It might well have been stupid for reasons of personal safety however... Have we ever had a game postponed an hour before kick off at the Etihad? I remember one being postponed for ice around the stadium but I think that was postponed several hours beforehand.

Yep, the derby in the Carling Cup was postponed mid-afternoon.

The day before wasn't it?

Snow and ice were falling from the roof around then, and the outside ticket office kept shutting cus of it.

Well played GiMPs.

Left my gaff in Widnes at 5.50 (after begging my boss to be let out early after the two and half hour 25 mile commute to the Chelsea game last Monday) and was on Regent Rd when I heard the news at 18.40.

Wouldn't mind betting 99% of fans (Blues & Mackems) were either there or in transit at that time.

Wonder why they called it off so late - not like it's been beautiful weather all day is it?
