You should really be in agreement with me that brown was profligate.

I dont think Brown was profligate. The Tories are fond of the saying "didnt fix the roof whilst the sun was shining" but they forget that huge investment in public services was needed after 18 years of Tory rule.I look at Salford Royal Hospital of which im very fond and the improvement under Labour was astonishing. Labour rebuilt the walls, the roof wasnt finished and the bank went tits up in Tory speak.

My biggest issue of the moment is the lies from both Tories and Labour. I wish the Tories would be honest and admit that austerity is ideological and let voters know there true aims and I wish Labour would stop pretending to be Tory lite and be honest and Keynesian in there approach. It would at least give voters a chance to see ideological differences and then they can vote accordingly to there beliefs rather than on who eats a bacon butty better.

Sadly Rasc due to the mentality of your average tory any investment in public service is profligate. All public expenditure is wasteful they are all inefficient lazy and can only be made good once they've been carved up and sold off to the private sector just like the railways.

But I do agree with on Labour being tory light the only theory behind it is that they've been painted into a corner by the Tories. For what Osborne lacks in being a Chancellor he makes up in being good conman. He's sold the country austerity convinced everyone that needs to be that this is the only way.Getting deficit down was never a problem for Thatcher, Major or Blair well not in the breakneck speeds that Osborne wants. For that you have to congratulate him he's be a great used car salesman.

Can you imagine him as our pm! ???
Err, yes I can.
Obviously you can't.
Perhaps we can move the debate on a bit.

Apart from coming across as a complete geek, I have yet to hear him say anything of real substance. To let him be the political figurehead for our country would be a disaster as 88 percent of the country agree. On top of the fact labour left the country in such an economic mess I simple fail to see how they are electable.
You're not simple mate but you are wrong.
Repeat after me - It was the banking crisis which left ' the country in such an economic mess' .

What about the bloated public sector? That had no bearing whatsoever?

Which bloated public sector is this?

The Police?
The Armed forces?
Civil servants?
Nurses?
Midwives?
Librarians?
Border officials?
Teachers?
Doctors?

Which sectors are bloated?

Would you like to see all the above cut again?

Would you prefer we lived in the 1400s with Barons and a feudal system with concentrated wealth and serfs?

My mrs is retiring on 2/3rds pension from the public sector in 2 years. She works ina department where currently 6 of the 11 people there are on the sick. Flexi time, blatant inneficiencies and General piss taking. she has spent today with a union rep dealing with a woman with alleged bi polar who has had 6 months on the sick but goes on the piss every weekend. I graft 70 hours a week and no one is paying my final salary pension. The public sector grew grossly inneficienct under the last labour government. Surely you accept that?

So you ignore my answer and reply with a personal anecdote that bears no relation at all to my reply.

Can you please say which part of my list of public sectors was inefficient under any government?

Getting rid of BT has created a brilliant innovative industry that is very competitive. I work in telecommunications and it was one of the only sectors to still do well throughout the recession.

Every sector you have listed I would say.

Perhaps he's indicating that none of the inefficiencies come from the areas you list, but there are big inefficiencies in areas you don't.

I personally feel that there are far too many layers of management and bureaucracy in many of the public services and many of these were introduced in the last Labour government. It'd be really interesting to see how, for example, the wages of NHS employees were split between nurses, doctors, maintenance and this final segment of 'administrative' people.

Lots of people in public jobs that really aren't necessary IMO and that takes up budget that could be spent on nurses and teachers to really improve public services.

I worked in the electricity and supply industry at the time of privatisation. It needed an enormous input of capital to refurbish and upgrade the network. There was absolutely no way any government could afford such investment.

I will spell it out - it is very difficult to get sacked in the public sector. The unions are still strong, the pensions too generous and millions of people are taking the piss. Google - why is the public sector so inneficienct - Sheffield forum! It reflects my experiences. I used to do a lot of wok with Manchester City council. People comin in at 9, having a brew, chatting, going to a cig brake, oh it's lunchtime and suddenly it was 3.30 and I will use my flexi time and fuckoff home. I spent 9 months working directly alongside council workers. It was a an absolute joke. About 5 percent would have been employable in the real world and that's being generous.

Besides the NHS which is one of a kind around the world, I think the private sectors do a better job of running all them.

Perhaps some should be part private so that if it's performance is below par directors are fined and held accountable.

Exact same in telecom's mate, BT are fucking stone age with their copper wired broadband. So outdated no way the government would have been able to keep up without Virgin Media and co pioneering.
