The greatest sportsman EVER

Not looked through the whole 10 pages,but has Ed Moses been mentioned? Unbeaten for 10 years and something like 110 races(just looked on wiki-actually 107 consecutive finals and 122 races).That is quite impressive.

Phil Taylor should not be mentioned in the same breath as several of the others named in this thread. That said, Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali are fair shouts.

Personally, I don't think it is possible to name ONE sportsman as the best ever, as there are too many factors to consider and every sport is different - if we had someone who was that good at three different sports, fair enough, but obviously, that's not the case. Anyway, I'm going for the Top 4 IMHO but clearly people may disagree. The first three are relatively easy for me, but I will add a note to the 4th, because a number of people have chosen Sachin Tendulkar and I want to show why that is clearly wrong. So, in NO particular order, I have:

1). Muhammad Ali (despite one poster's pathetic little snipe at him)
2). Tiger Woods
3). Michael Jordan

and

4) Don Bradman.

I kept Bradman separate because of the few that named Tendulkar - look at just a few stats and then tell me that Tendulkar is above Bradman!! Sorry but No way, Jose!

Test average: Bradman 99.94, Tendulkar 56.94.

* Bradman averaged over a 100 in 7 different calendar years – Tendulkar in 2.

* A ton for Bradman every 1.79 Tests – Tendulkar every 3.47.

* A ton for Bradman every 2.41 Test innings – Tendulkar every 5.06.

* Double centuries: Bradman 12 frm 70 cmpltd inns – Tendulkar 6 from 258.

* Triple centuries – Bradman 2, Tendulkar 0.

* Bradman: Centuries in 6 successive Tests – Tendulkar: 2 in successive Tests 6 times.

* 1,000 Test runs – Bradman 13 Tests, Tendulkar 28 Tests.

* Fastest to 2,000 – Bradman in 22 Tests, closest George Headley 32, Tendulkar 44.

* Fastest to 3,000 – Bradman 33, closest Weekes 51, Tendulkar 67.

* Fastest to 4,000 – Bradman 48, closest Sutcliffe 68, Tendulkar 86.

* Fastest to 5,000 – Bradman 56, closest Jack Hobbs 91, Tendulkar 103.

* And fastest to 6,000 – Bradman 68, closest Gary Sobers 111, Tendulkar 120.

So, Bradman it is, guys. Tendulkar is world class, but not Number 1. Sobers, which someone else wrote, doesn't even come close.

Different times different games. Same applies exactly to football. Like would a pissed up Best run Micah ragged, I very much doubt it.

However I can only go on what I have seen. Statistics will always show The Don scored more, quicker and on (Boycott alert) uncovered pitches. So he's a legend and I totally appreciate the fact.

But then I've watched the 'Little Master' Tendulker totally demolish attacks with sublime skill totally glued to the telly as a kid and then into my thirties. Smashing perfectly good deliveries all around the ground. Awesome. Loved in India with god like status and inspired 100's of millions to take up cricket. So Sachin for me.

would that be my pathetic little snipe at him? he blatantly cheated. whenever the greatest footballer ever discussion comes up, people always call maradona a cheat for the one opportunistic moment that cheated england. the ali fiasco against cooper wasn't a split second decision, it was a thought out process. i'm not knocking what he went on to achieve but merely pointing out that this is rarely mentioned when discussing how great he was.

It's off tangent so I apologise straight away.

All sports have over the years become so much more professional (sp) that even to be a golfer or cricketer or F1 driver you have to really be tip top health wise, oh apart from darts and baseball.

But a full back these days lives on a strict diet, no booze, no late nights, the gym, bleep test and all that. They are atheletes (sp) with not an ounce of fat on them. Best and most other footballers from times gone by would be fucked at half time with the pace of the modern game. Bloody Shrek went for a drink and couldn't even perform in training the next day.

I know the romance and the memories of great sporting events from the past are in our hearts. I love them, 86 and 90 world cups will stay with me forever but sport has evolved.

1. Michael Jordan
2. Muhammed Ali
3. Tiger Woods
4. Michael Phelps (most Olympic golds in a career is surely worth something)
5. Usain Bolt
6. Sidney Crosby (this is more from personal experience, I have watched this man play at Juniour and NHL level and his athleticism is second to none)

Jonah Lomu
Muhammad Ali
Johan Cruyff
Christy Ring
Michael Jordan
James Hird
Ian Thorpe
Usain Bolt
Nadia Comaneci
Herb Brooks (as a coach, he changed the way we thought)

Special mention: Francois Pienaar (there have been better players in the game but he led the SA team to win the WC and help unite a very divided nation)
Katie Taylor. Her list of honours is endless, and is pretty much one of the main reasons womens boxing is in the Olympics.
And Pele, obviously Pele.

That's all I can think of. There are so many out there, and the problem is obviously comparing then and now.
How good is Pele comapred to Messi, how good is Thorpe compared to Phelps,
