The greatest sportsman EVER

Phil Taylor should not be mentioned in the same breath as several of the others named in this thread. That said, Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali are fair shouts.

Personally, I don't think it is possible to name ONE sportsman as the best ever, as there are too many factors to consider and every sport is different - if we had someone who was that good at three different sports, fair enough, but obviously, that's not the case. Anyway, I'm going for the Top 4 IMHO but clearly people may disagree. The first three are relatively easy for me, but I will add a note to the 4th, because a number of people have chosen Sachin Tendulkar and I want to show why that is clearly wrong. So, in NO particular order, I have:

1). Muhammad Ali (despite one poster's pathetic little snipe at him)
2). Tiger Woods
3). Michael Jordan

and

4) Don Bradman.

I kept Bradman separate because of the few that named Tendulkar - look at just a few stats and then tell me that Tendulkar is above Bradman!! Sorry but No way, Jose!

Test average: Bradman 99.94, Tendulkar 56.94.

* Bradman averaged over a 100 in 7 different calendar years – Tendulkar in 2.

* A ton for Bradman every 1.79 Tests – Tendulkar every 3.47.

* A ton for Bradman every 2.41 Test innings – Tendulkar every 5.06.

* Double centuries: Bradman 12 frm 70 cmpltd inns – Tendulkar 6 from 258.

* Triple centuries – Bradman 2, Tendulkar 0.

* Bradman: Centuries in 6 successive Tests – Tendulkar: 2 in successive Tests 6 times.

* 1,000 Test runs – Bradman 13 Tests, Tendulkar 28 Tests.

* Fastest to 2,000 – Bradman in 22 Tests, closest George Headley 32, Tendulkar 44.

* Fastest to 3,000 – Bradman 33, closest Weekes 51, Tendulkar 67.

* Fastest to 4,000 – Bradman 48, closest Sutcliffe 68, Tendulkar 86.

* Fastest to 5,000 – Bradman 56, closest Jack Hobbs 91, Tendulkar 103.

* And fastest to 6,000 – Bradman 68, closest Gary Sobers 111, Tendulkar 120.

So, Bradman it is, guys. Tendulkar is world class, but not Number 1. Sobers, which someone else wrote, doesn't even come close.

Fucking hell are you an actual teacher?

The more & more i read what people are posting in this thread the more & more i'm agreeing with this comment.

Max Woosnam
Michael Jordan
Don Bradman

All unreal sportsmen!!

The reason i selected Phil Taylor was probably purely and simply for his skill level in relation to what he does & for what he has turned darts into, for what it is now becuase of him. That said the 3 names now mentioned above all are probably better sportmens IMO for the evidence given!! The Max Woosnam life is absolutely unbelievable & although i'd heard of his name & that he was a great spotsman, i never looked in depth to what he actually did - remarkable

Ha Ha Ha - no, mate, it's an old nickname the girls in an office gave me years ago.

Just obtained the info. from Google as I have a few friends who are always going on about Tendulkar being a 'God' in India and it gets on my wick sometimes. Saw this thread and some had actually named him as the best ever, so thought I'd post the stats.

I'll shut up now. ;o)

And the Don played on largely uncovered wickets, though as he was probably the greatest batsman ever to have wielded the willow, Sir Garfield was also a top class medium fast bowler and a top quality spin bowler, Suni Gavasker would have been one of the best batsmen of my lifetime, alongside Viv, but it is all conjective.

Not even gonna mention any names as my choices..... But

it has to be broken down into sports, then an indivudual to represent each sport.

I wouldn't consider Phil Taylor to be a sportsman, but himself and his fans would.

Michael Schumacher had a huge team behind him making sure his tyre/refuelling was quicker than his competitors.
So is it him or is it a whole team?

This team can include media influence as wel.... A player (Jordan/Beckham) with a decent merchandise deal will get favourable attention from the mainstream media... Thus people are more inclined to nominate/beleive them to be the best sportsmen.... This is very apparent with the whole Beckham Bandwagon.

For me if it's one individual you have to choose the Olympic/Athletic route, someone who has conquered their chosen sport both physically and mentally, and when performing have done this by themselves.... Team based sports for me fall short of this.
Athletes training vigourously for many years, earning piss poor money and media attention when compared to the likes of Jordan/Beckham/Schumacher

I'm so unaware of who the best athletes are I can't even name many, Usain Bolt? that's about it....

Could people please stop saying that Tiger Woods is a top sportsman, he plays golf for fucks sake!!

Its not a real sport.

If someone won the world tiddly winks contest 5 years on the trot, would that make him a great sportsman ?

How about Daley Thompson. Two golds in the toughest event in the Olympics. First athlete to hold Olympic, Commonwealth, European and world titles in a single event.

Sir Stanley Matthews,still playing 1st division at 50 (alright it was Stoke City),and played his last game over eighty.
Teatotal vegetarian but supremely talented.
