On one level, you are absolutely correct.

Some of the responses on this thread have shocked me to be honest. I think that Ireland has moved further forward than England on this issue.

You start a thread praising the IRA on a mainly British forum, if brains were dynamite you would not have enough to blow your hat off, you really need to get out more

The fact of the matter is ( though facts hardly matter to some of you bogoted types) I have not once praised the IRA on this thread. Not Fucking once! You show me where I've praised the IRA.

I have said that they AND the British army fought a war and that BOTH sides were brave and sometimes brutal. Unlike some of you though, I have not resorted to vile abuse of the British side.

A lot of what I've seen in response reminds me of why reason in the face of jingoistic bollocks like this is completely fucking wasted.

If I am thick for posting this thread, then I'm happy. Because I'd rather be the kind of thick that believes in facts over politics and propaganda, every time

I agreed with you to a certain extent about south armagh only because I served there and knew first hand how good the asu's in that area were, the day thatcher took the gloves off the sas though spelt the end of the armed struggle in my opinion. The northern alliance (who happen to be afghanis) were the ones who moved against the Taliban backed by western special forces, the main ones scrapping now happen to be whats classed as foreign fighters (Chechens, pakistanis,and any other clown that fancies a scrap!) hence the reason for the so called secret peace talks! To say no one has ever won in Afghanistan when it is the afghanis who are carrying the fight is quite ridiculous!

I am pleased that someone with your direct experience can at least confirm that the ASU's were a bit more than the stupid cowards some say they they were.

The conclusion of General Mike Jackson was that a military deafeat of the IRA had never been achieved in any recognisable way and the amount of arms voluntarily decommisioned confirmed that.

As for Afghanistan, the same individuals, families and tribes who fought the Soviets are now fighting the USA led alliance. That's established fact. The taliban are paying them.

I don't condone the actions of ANY side. Fenians killed my great great great great grandfather (Manchester Martyrs) 3, most probably, Irish Catholics were hanged for this.
