Indeed - i think at the time I was reading it, Rooney was having his first book out ''My Story'' or whatever it was at the age of 23 or something..... I then read Bert's book about being captured twice by the Russian's, smacking someone of a higher rank who didn't want to escape, smacking the guard and stealing his gun and in the dark of the night seeing a shadow in front and not knowing which side he was on thought ''it's me or him'' and shot the figure. And in Rooney's book he was telling us about having a paper round.....
His Hitler Youth days was fascinating too - he was playing sports in ages way beyond his years and really was the blonde haired blue eyed boy Hitler dreamed of. Because of his sporting ability, he got away with getting into trouble when other lads were dealt with!
Can't wait to see the film and hope all of that is captured in it - hope it makes its way to the USA though suspect i shall have to wait until Amazon or netflix pick it up.
 
Can’t bloody wait for this. John henshaw is fantastic. A real blue. He goes to my dads church in Mossley and they always have crack about city.

Bert is also my dads hero. I told him about this film today and we are all taking him in April to see it.

First time he has been to the pictures since Et above the Kwik save in burnage in about 1984.

John Henshaw is a mate of my cousins. A Monsall/Newton Heath lad. My dad used to pick him up in his taxi and he always says he's a belting lad. Good actor from Peaky Blinders plays Bert as well. Can't wait to see it.

Definitely Rowland's book as I used all the information in his book for my documentary on Bert. It's a comprehensive book about Bert's whole life. His biography deserves a larger readership than Clay's book as it is a quality piece of work in comparison. Alan is also a really nice bloke and I will always be grateful to him for introducing me to Bert back in 2004.

That was where I saw my first 18 film, 'The Manitou' with Tony Curtis, when I was 15 years old.

And on 32 seconds is probably the answer to my prev question..the commentary goes " if that neck has been knocked out of joint again"

So ..there did appear to be a problem prior to the 1956 final..maybe the injury first happened against Sheffield utd on 11th April 1956,the match before Bert missed his only two matches of that season,against burnley and luton..before returning for the final home game of the season against Portsmouth on 28th April...7 days before the Fa cup final v Brum.

Spoke to Gary James a few weeks back,who confirmed he had no info re the neck injury flaring up prior to the final,but i think Trautmann played.more than one match for Manchester City with broken bones in his neck..

I read that one when I was a young lad and it was a great read.

I agree on Rowland's book. A great biography. Written before the exaggerations about demonstrations took hold as well. I'd urge everyone to read that as it was researched and written at a time when many of the people mentioned were still alive and could be consulted. Clay's book, though also good, couldn't capture the City material in the same way.

The actor who plays Bert is David Kross who was in War Horse and The Reader. Don't think he was in Peaky Blinders.
