But more seriously, I agree with you. I hear constantly "we're the richest Xth country in the world and we can afford Y", and honestly we've been going backwards at a rate of knots. GDP per capita - a much better measure than GDP - is continually falling. Compared Sierra Leone, sure we are loaded. Compared to the random western nation? Not so much.
The minor problem with just paying everyone more is that our exports would steadily become more and more uncompetitive, and the value of the pound would likely fall as well, making imports more expensive and driving up still higher prices. A vicious circle. The only way to sustainably higher wages is through increased productivity, and that comes from investment and (sometimes) work ethic, in both of which measures I think we sadly lagging.
