The Labour Government

I’d argue everyone else is grossly underpaid. Our wage economy and growth over the last fifteen years has been pretty awful.
You presumably haven't had to pay for a plumber lately ;-)

But more seriously, I agree with you. I hear constantly "we're the richest Xth country in the world and we can afford Y", and honestly we've been going backwards at a rate of knots. GDP per capita - a much better measure than GDP - is continually falling. Compared Sierra Leone, sure we are loaded. Compared to the random western nation? Not so much.

The minor problem with just paying everyone more is that our exports would steadily become more and more uncompetitive, and the value of the pound would likely fall as well, making imports more expensive and driving up still higher prices. A vicious circle. The only way to sustainably higher wages is through increased productivity, and that comes from investment and (sometimes) work ethic, in both of which measures I think we sadly lagging.

That and sort out the increasing disparity of wealth.

Why are plumbers grossly overpaid, is it a race to the bottom?
There are some on here that have an opinion and decide some jobs and professions are overpaid yet, when asked, refuse to disclose what they themselves do for a living so others on here can have an opinion on whether THEY are overpaid.

Some probably even voted for Brexit and are now wondering why a shortage of some trades is allowing those trades people they are moaning about to up their hourly rate. But they knew what they were voting for...........

R/W meltdown over the Chagos Islands and Mauritius. Desperate tactic - all the Govt have done is signed off on an agreement already reached with the previous Govt. One of the leadership candidates really angry - guess who?
