For along time, I have disliked our relationship with the US. The 'relationship' being the UK acting like an over excited lap dog. It's about time we looked more towards Europe than the US as they are our neighbours, we have more in common with them and our interests are more aligned.

In fact, it's probably about time Europe became more self-sufficient both diplomatically and militarily, rather than be part of an unequal relationship with the US.

More rant, than well thought-out and cogent argument.

Worth noting that there are people in Trump's staff and the VP, have criticised Trump in the past. While Musk was previously a Democrat.

These kind of people are transactional. They do not hold grudges. They simply do what is best for them at that time.

Let's see what Musk's role is as I would expect the intelligence services (not just US but other Five Eyes nations) will regard him as a security risk. It would be surprising if his role is external facing.

The "special relationship" has long given the UK a strategic advantage, being the middle man between the US and Europe.

Being close to both can only be a good thing for us and it shouldn't matter who is in office in the US or UK. We are looking at multi-century horizons here, not some 4 year term where X and Y might not get along great. That'll always happen but it should be irrelevant long term.

A close US-UK-EU relationship is good for the west.

Appreciate where you are coming from (my post was more a rant than well reasoned argument :) ) but what relationship do we have with the US? Apart from being a lap dog, of course?

Not quite sure what you mean by middleman between US and Europe but the US seemingly now regard Germany as their main partner in Europe, according to better informed individuals than me. They won't even enter in to a mutually beneficial trade relationship with us.

Just to add....

I am not seriously suggest we abandon the 'relationship' with the US. Rather, work more with Europe.

Brexit severely weakened the UK’s position which is why the Americans probably feel more bullish dealing with the EU directly now. Though the state of German politics at the moment, they’re in no position to lecture anyone!

The Americans and Europeans are culturally different and the UK has always had the advantage of being able to better understand both sides. We’re culturally and geographically in the middle.

It might not be as strong as it was 15 years ago but it is still an important partnership in the world that is much bigger than whoever occupies the office.

Didn't stop those labour party members taking advantage of it though and that is what the post was about.

I don't know any private landlords so not aware of their con scheme to buy somebody else's long term council house.

However I do know people who bought/ paid for their grandparents house and then moved in or sold it after they passed away.

Though again not what my post was about.

I bought it from my grandma/relatives but I paid market rate for it, plenty of aunties and uncles wanted their inheritance money.

It was 90k, I don't know what they paid for it but I'm sure they didn't buy it when it was a 3k price.

There has only been my family lived in the house since it was built after the war.

My dad believed working men didn't own their own home, so my parents missed out on a 3k house because he was an idiot, he was finally talked round when it was 14k.

My Mam still lives in it.

Again I'm not disagreeing that is is madness just that they didn't think it madness when they bought their own council houses cheap as fuck.

The house next door to me costs £550 a month to rent my mortgage isn't half that.

We have a housing association in Carlisle not council houses anymore, they are not cheap to rent, they keep going around them and putting new rooves, doors and windows in them and bumping the rent up, the latest fad is a new plastered front that looks like it will crack in a hard frost.

There is no affordable housing anymore.
