The Labour Government

Yet we are reliant on imported feedstock. Recycling will at least make us theoretically self sufficient - not to dismiss your concerns with quality.

Worth saying similar grade steel can now be made in electric arc furnaces too.

Still rather we have the capability to still have both though.

5 years of “yeah but Tories” to look forwards to.

I thought the adults were in charge now as well and that we would be seeing solutions and policy change that mattered?

I'm getting bored with all of them. It would be nice if a govt at some point just got back to the essentials of making sure things worked at a basic level - transport, health, housing, education etc. At present it seems we can't afford any of that or heating allowance for pensioners, but if you want to start a war in eastern Europe or some wanky green initiative it's a bottomless wallet.

That’s a semantic point :) You can take recycled steel and make higher grade steel from it.
Its not its a fact! And the steel you recycle, isn't higher grade either. The fact is we will be the only G20 country that can't make our own steel. How on earth is that a positive? Starmer doesn't seem to care.

It is semantics, my point was the steel made in an electric arc furnace from recycled steel can be higher grade. You can technically actually make virgin steel in a EAF too as long as you’ve got the right feed.

I didn’t say or agree it was a positive, I said we should have both.

Well, we shall have to dissagree on this.

Shutting all our steelworks down and coal mines then relying on cheap imports was a hell of a gamble .........no one thought wars would break out or China turns into enemy number 1.

Britain is now great for Lidl and Aldi though.....oh and shoplifting
Incredible that we are told we are gearing up to stand up to Russia at the same time as shutting the last remnants of domestic steel production.

We don't stand a fucking chance...........sitting ducks we are now.

Back to nicking pots and pans and railings it is. Oh hang on ...no Gas or leccy.

To Ukraine we go lads....

I’m not sure what we’re disagreeing on given I said we should have both but fair enough :)
The steel you recycle in a EAF generally isn't as good a quality as steel you make in a blast furnace. That's why the rest of the world are not changing all their blast furnaces to EAFs.

This government have paid Tata steel half a billion pounds to close our two blast furnaces at Port Talbot and build a new blast furnace in India. All in the name of saving CO2 emissions. Utter madness.
