The Labour Government

Obviously, I'm not living in Blighty, and wouldn't be in touch with the general feeling on the ground. But on the face of it, that's a poor set of results for Labour and the Conservatives overnight. Reform clearly the big winners. Something for Badenoch, and particularly Starmer, to reflect on. Would it be replicated in a general election? I would guess not. But a lot of people seem to be unhappy at the moment.

I didn’t say it wasn’t an issue for many. I’m saying there is fuck all anyone can do about it. You can’t stop the boats by smashing the gangs. Where there is money to be made people will exploit it. See prohibition in the US or the industry that will be created around dodging tariffs and a booming black market in non-tariffed applied goods.

What you can do is remove the need to cross by dinghy. A need that we have deliberately created and Labour are continuing. Process in France. Legitimise routes and the spectacle of people arriving on our beaches in flimsy crafts will be eliminated.

We don’t do this for fear of being seen to be ‘soft on asylum’ seekers and the usual suspects will bleat about ‘hiding the truth’ so Tories and Labour opt for looking impotent instead. Not very bright, but there you go.

Labour will have to think of a solution, because that is the price of being in Government.

The answer is make everyone better off and feel positive about the future, nobody would give a hoot about immigration if everyone had a reasonable standard of living, but instead living standands are falling for the average family.

When you have people who are working using food banks and having to borrow on credit every month to make ends meet, of course it will create tension.

Major cities have always been melting pots of culture and race, so blaming immigrants is less of an issue, but outside these in the rest of the country, its definitely not the case. In these areas immigration for many equates to a reason for their falling living standards, lack of jobs, poor housing etc. Its all a result of being left behind and forgotten about by successive governments.

Nobody rational wants a far right government, but ironically the conditions for them have been created by the centre ground parties ineptitude when it comes to wealth distribution and excessive focus on London.

The country has stagnated and been overtaken by most other developed countries because we have failed to modernise our infrastructure and political systems. We have missed the boat on the digital industrial revolution because we can't make decisions fast enough. No matter who is in power will make no difference. The entire process of Government is too cumbersome, slow, and old-fashioned. We pass lots of irrelevant laws which are never enforced because the police and other authorities don't have enough resources. There are too many people at the top with vested interests who have got rich on the London property market and want to protect themselves.

We have failed in some areas - rail infrastructure for example, yet in digital infrastructure we are ahead of many countries. Our embrace of online working, shopping, the use of non cash options are ahead of many European countries and a lot of the US. Yet we also resist these changes, the phasing out of cash, dislike of green options, electric cars - pretty much the Reform idea of going back to the fifties and ten bob notes :)

I agree on spreading the wealth and too much focus on London, yet London generates the wealth precisely because of the steady influx of people along with ideas, enterprises and a melding of cultures. London’s financial district is innovative compared to most and the public transport is first rate. Do areas like Lincolnshire want this? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to recall the people of Lincs continually rejecting the idea of motorways and in the same breath moaning about lack of investment and towns dying on their feet. Transport infrastructure brings investment, prosperity and people - the latter being something else the people of Lincs do not want either, apparently!
 
Reform aren't the answer, but clearly a reform is needed. The British public is sick to the back teeth of the current political system and have been for a while.

They're sick of Labours stance and policies and of the Conservatives stance and policies. If either want to regain the support of the British public,Labour, more than most, are going to have to be seen to make changes,or more of the Tory vote wil be syphoned away to Reform.

Here you are rubbishing another poster's view and at the same time stating - "It's not an issue for many"- how are you qualified to state that so unequivocally? What is many in your eyes? - or are you just making things up off the cuff.

Some people might think that for such a statement to be made without any backing up of facts and in the face of so mush reporting of it being an high profile issue could be viewed as being laughable to the point of being puerile.

Someone posts "the boats are a big issue in everyone’s eyes". And it's anyone who challenges that who's being a political snob.

From the people who gave us Brexit and said that would solve all our problems including immigration!

And Reform would put all asylum seekers in Secure Detention. Not cheap - prison places are much more expensive than your local hotel.
