Yes, I work with young people who are looking for work. Very few look at the social care sector. That includes all cultures and ethnicities.
My mum was in a fantastic care home until she recently passed. She was there for years and every time I visited the vibe of the place was excellent. The staff were mainly in their 30s and 40s and I never saw a miserable face, from neither staff or resident. They arranged activities every week and the place was always happy.
I'd say about 90 percent of the staff were of Asian descent.
The only problem I ever had was when she was dying. I don't know if it was a culture thing or what but the lack of clarity on the night of her death resulted in my not being with her when she died. Despite them telephoning me three hours before, they couched it in terms that didnt express the urgency. I think the lady was trying to say "get here now" (as I had agreed the day before with the team) but simply said "her breathing is rapid..."
As I was getting daily updates at this stage I expected her to stress the end was near, but she didn't. 3 hours later I got the call "she has stopped breathing...."
I almost screamed "give her CPR then!" until it dawned on me that she was telling me she had died.
It doesn't matter that much really, all things considered, as the care they gave her for years was second to none. That's what mattered. Yet it rankles a bit at the moment.
