The Lack of Atmosphere

The old vs young debate on a forum with quite a few elderly blokes is only going to end one way, especially now they're so used to having this argument. It's a stupid one to have in the first place, what are we going to do shove them all up in level 3 and not let them buy away tickets?

I sit towards the back of the North Stand, right behind the net. Im 48 and i shout encouragement and sing as much as I can. Most of the people near me, mostly younger, say NOTHING! They might if we are 4 or 5 up but apart from that nothing. You can hear the same voices trying to get a song going but most people are lazy and dont want to know. These fans are long-term city fans, not tourists. The only thing that gets these zombies going is a misplaced pass by us or if we concede a goal. Then these silent ghosts suddenly find their voices and slag-off and boo!

Maybe if the club stopped playing music at full volume through the pa until the point the ref blows for kick off you may get fans chanting and singing more. It completely drowns out the crowd which is most likely why people remain quiet nowadays. Why bother if you can't even hear yourself . Its absurd at the moment and is deafening. I can remember years ago, watching the Kippax fill up as a youngster. You used to get in that stand a good half hour before kick off. Even in the Platt Lane benches. By the time the team ran out the ground would be buzzing. All without a constant fucking din of deafening music or constant pa announcements. Drives me up the wall. And to be honest, I've always found Blue Moon to be such a bloody dirge anyway. Much preferred that Doves City jingle they used to play a few years back before the teams came out but I wish they'd calm it down with the music and let the atmosphere develop naturally. Let's face it we have big games on a regular basis now and last night could've been like a derby atmosphere or even like Hamburg UEFA cup match if that infernal pa was turned off other than announcing the teams. I appreciate you're gonna play music or show a few recent goals or interviews on the scoreboard screens but not up to the point of kick off, it just completely nullifies any thought of joining in a chant or sing song if you just can't hear yourselves. That's my take on the atmosphere thing anyway. Mind you, its most likely the same at quite a lot of big grounds these days.

I'm sure we had the same music as the X factor for the build up on the two screens the other night, shocking.

On another note, at half time if you look around the ground you'll see everybody standing up in all the stands. As soon as the game starts everybody sits back down screaming "sit down" at anybody with the audacity to stand as we're about to take a shot on goal.

Do they? I've had a season ticket for 11 years in three different areas and I've never heard anyone be told to sit down at an exciting moment of the game.

A lot of gloryhunters were there on Monday, and that doesn't help. People who are clearly new to City, and new to us because we're now a big draw.

That certainly doesn't help the atmosphere. The steep cost of tickets on Monday wouldn't help either, that also lends itself more to a tourist type of fan.

The proper blues on a low budget, who can't attend regularly due to cost and/or family or work commitments have to pick and choose fixtures, cost is a big factor in considering which games to attend - especially if taking a kid or two.

That isn't a consideration to the tourist type, they just turn up now and then for the glamour games. Cost is rarely an issue because they don't attend regularly anyway.

This topic has been done to death, but I'd rather we didn't see anymore increases in pricing, especially individual tickets. I don't want to see our match day crowd going the way of Chelsea's or United's, I doubt I'm alone in that sentiment.

A reduction in prices would help the atmosphere, but that's never going to happen while we're still selling out.

I have a mate in EL3, and he tells me he's surrounded by day trippers and plastics more often than not. I'm largely sheltered from it in EL1, as almost everyone around us is a regular, but I've been noticing the difference of late - particularly in big games.

This is a pricing issue. The atmosphere and the pricing go hand in hand.

Football is the only 'inclusive' public platform where gentrification is encouraged, quite contradictory. There shouldn't be any raised eyebrows when the atmospheres suffer.

Don't normally complain about this- as I haven't seen it a whole lot yet. But on Monday there were two guys in front of me. Clearly not English and just taking photos all game. Strangely one of them did make a bit of noise, or at least join in if a song ever got going, but, I guess we will have to accept these fans are a price to pay in becoming a big team. I'm happy with it. If you want a good atmosphere, go to aways, as people have said. Spurs last week was a good atmosphere for example. If you are all close together, and singing starts people will join in, regardless of your age.

Football has changed. The cost of it has forced many people out. It's more like going to the theatre these days. I don't think there's much that can be done about it really. Although all home matches are a sell out these days, most of the people I know that used to go, don't anymore. Standing and lower ticket prices would be the only option but that would mean a whole culture change for English football and the authorities don't want it.

All this bluster about the age groups at City should be put to one side in the context of the atmosphere at the Etihad. There are enough young and older Males(cough!) to create an atmosphere at the Etihad. The issue/problem is getting them together in one area/ block of the ground. And don't forget, those numbers will increase when the stadium ls expanded to 54,000 or 60,000+ thousand.

*What is needed is a concerted effort by the club to move and relocate those fans who wish to stand and sing together.*

Do any of you think the club will bite the bullet and make the effort to relocate those fans who want to stand and sing together into blocks 115 and/or 114 in 15 months time? Surely the demand will be there. 500-750 young or older fans out of a crowd of 54,000-60,000. Easy!

If the club don't do the above, nothing will change at the Etihad. As it stands the singing sections are too diluted with a mixture of singers, non-singers, etc. Asking the fans on here to change things st the Etihad to improve the atmosphere won't work. Asking the club to change the stadium layout/singing sections can and will work. But will the club listen and do it?

I'm knocking on a bit but I'm louder than most younger lads who are fuckin around taking photos or on ipads/smartphones/texting.

look at the City fans who buy tickets in the sections of away tickets that are not sold and sent back. MOST (not all) sit down in total silence.

With jesters hats on looking in amazement at the ones stood.

It will seldom get to a cauldron of passion .......only for BIG games.

It's just how it is. All this cheesy bollocks at the club is just to go towards Americanisation and some hate it but some love it.

Major change will not happen it seems and stadium expansion was the BIG opportunity for safe standing areas in one huge block.

Can't see standing ever happening now as it's been talked about for over ten years and nothing has been achieved.

Just accept it and either get on with it or don't go if you hate it that much.

No fucker is putting me in level 3. I'd stop going.

Many Blues are saying the right things such as more standing, cheaper tickets/beer but it is incorrect to suggest that "the club" do something about this as what it really falls down to is - whether the GMP (Police) want this kind of atmosphere at matches.

Do GMP want away fans relocated?
Do GMP want rail seating?

It's much easier for them to deal with large blocks full of home fans (regardless of age) sat down sat on their hands not even whispering than handling 18-35yr olds pissed up and having a sing song.

This is what its all about... the fact the atmosphere has been gradually eradicated due to more Police enforcement and stricter ground regulations.

Add this to higher prices that most of the working classes cannot afford and there you have it - a victory for the establishment.

I am slowly turning off to the English game. I would only go to matches for the atmosphere, the difference than watching it on Tv... now its just the same as watching it on Tv.

As for the suggestion of - go to away matches.

The pricing of the ticket, travel, and food/drink which has to be bought for away trips is expensive for me which is why I don't go to aways much. Not out of Choice.

But the main point is - how do we as a strong number of fans lobby against thfr council, police, whoever? To get the changes hopefully implemented?
This is a democracy right?

Or not as it seems....
