The luckiest City fans in our history

I am of that generation who were probably some of the longest suffering as city fans. Im nearly 51 and up until the FA cup win in 2010/11 Ive seen us win jack shit….

Luckiest fans? my son was born in 2012, in fact he was the reason I didn’t go to the QPR game as my wife was 8 months and a couple weeks pregnant………he’s seen 11 years of success…..so he’s that genre of luckiest fans imo….they’ll see us win multiple CL’s, break 20 odd league titles, and no doubt eventually become the greatest club side there ever was….
Your wife was only 8 and a half months pregnant and you didn't go to the game. Priorities mate! Lol.

In all seriousness my kids take it for granted. I'm the same age as you and they'll never know the roller coaster we've been on. They'll never appreciate it like we do and they've never had the bad times that make the good times so sweet. I think we (and those up to a decade older) are the luckiest generation. We've seen it all.

Same as my grandson who is 8 - saw him yesterday and now apart from when he is at school he will not wear anything that isn’t City except for his Portugal shirt which has Bernardo on it so that’s OK by me - couldn’t be prouder
My grandson who 14 years old started coming to the matches with me when he was 2 years old. He doesn't remember the Agueroooooooo match but he was there. He's been to 13 Wembley games.
I remind him just how lucky he his. CTID

Happy days Blue, happy days

Not sure what has brought this on today but I'm right with you; although I (almost) always thought success could return but what we have now has surpassed my hopes and dreams.
I think it was something I read in the FT, from an article posted at the time of the takeover, that something else I was reading linked to. The final words were:

"Many scoffed when Roman Abramovich, on buying Chelsea in 2003, said the club could achieve further success. While it has enjoyed unprecedented success on the pitch, it has come at a cost, particularly wage inflation, and it admits it faces a struggle to meet its goal of breaking even by 2009-10.

Whether Abu Dhabi United is prepared to pay such a cost to transform City’s fortunes – assuming the deal completes – remains highly debatable."

I think that debate has been well and truly settled.

Probably been said, but to be in the luckiest group, I think you have to have been a fan surrounded by Rags when we were shite.

My kids are lucky in that they’ve only known success as City supporters, but the joy I’m getting from winning, and sticking it to the rags who took the piss all the time I was growing up, makes it even better.

I had to wait 22 years for our first major trophy, so it could have been worse but it wasn't a great experience. I think back to those days a lot though and there was always the hope and belief we might have a cup run and manage to win something. But what a time it's been since. I had the old videos of the great team in the 60s. I had the highs and lows of promotion and relegation but I also had to deal with the bastards down the road winning everything.

I never expected what we've subsequently achieved. When you look at what Thaksin was doing, how Everton have performed since their takeover and indeed most clubs with money, we've been so so fortunate to not only get the cash injection but from people who are so intelligent in running a business.

Getting Pep to come was a masterstroke, we really wouldn't have achieved half of what we have without him. The club is about more than just him, but he is a major part of our success and things will even out in terms of the competition when he does leave sadly. But for now, we have him and we're smashing it. I used to joke about us having an open top bus tour when we won the treble. In truth I was dreaming of seeing us parade the league cup through town. And I'd have been happy. Instead, we've won the lot and broken record after record. To think the European Cup came to the club does make me pinch myself sometimes.

Started supporting City in 1999 when I was 4/5 years old. Since the start of the pandemic I've had to keep reminding myself that we've now been successful for more of my City-supporting life than we were ever mediocre.

I feel very very lucky to have stood and witnessed that ’68 side. And right through the seventies, until I in effect left the country.
But the reasons for that are not purely to do with footballing quality. The football was pretty bloody good (when it was good). But that was not always. It was just the times. It was great rock and roll, it was starting to go to gigs, it was starting to go with girls, then it was going away to uni, where I had an absolute whale of a time on — I am a bit ashamed to say — the taxpayer's money (and scraped a second-class degree which, at the time, I was quite proud of: I was expecting a third, or an outright fail!); it was also getting to know the town of Manchester, which I adopted, and which adopted me, immediately; getting to hike in the Peak District, which in my case coincided with being a City supporter.
It was the times. And somehow, the experience of supporting City was part of that. City were one of the coolest sides in the country. City was one of the coolest clubs. The Kippax was the coolest possible place to be.
Hand on heart: I think this current side would probably wipe the floor with that City side, good as it was.

But I was lucky then. I'm lucky now. I'm very lucky that I chose the right side in Manchester. By God but I'm lucky with that. And I'm afraid I wasn't around for when we were in the third division, playing the likes of Wycombe and Stockport County. But I confess — I'm a teeny bit jealous of those who had that experience. As for the York Awayers, well, they're Maine Road Royalty, aren't they?
