The luckiest City fans in our history

What we are witnessing at the moment is total footbal the best ever and unlike anything we've seen before.

It's hard but we have to enjoy it in the moment and as it happens, I'm glad my brother John witnessed some of it, he'd have loved us winning the treble and beating the rags in that FA Cup final.

I started following City in early 1970, just before the League Cup and ECWC successes. It’s all due to Francis Lee, though that’s a story for another day.

The last 15 years have been the stuff of fairy tales. We certainly have been lucky, but considering the shit show of the previous three decades, we deserve our days in the sun.

The calibre of the players that have been here since HRH took over is almost unbelievable. From Zaba and Vinnie right at the start through to Phil and Erling today, each time one of our stalwarts left, we asked ourselves how can we replace him, but we’ve managed it.
For Zaba, Kyle. For Vinnie, Rúben. For Yaya, Kevin. For Sergio, Erling, though I’m not sure we will ever see one, who can replace Merlin. Yes, Phil is fantastic, but even he can’t do what David did.

When we were struggling during our wilderness years, I took very little notice of the Champions League, as I didn’t think we’d ever be playing in it, let alone winning it to complete the Treble.

There is no question that this is the greatest time to be a Blue.

Obviously this is the best time ever to be a City fan, but my personal favourite time was the two promotion seasons under Royle. From the opening game against Blackpool a sense of pride returned to the fans and the self mockery and abuse of the players stopped. Between the fans and the team there was a feeling of we're all in this together, captain Andy Morrison seemed a personification of us all. The Wigan semi was the most fervent atmosphere I can ever remember at Maine Rd and didn't we go through the ringer at Wembley. It was the end of years of decline, stuck my chest out at work and took the piss unmercifully out of non Manc rags. The madness of Blackburn twelve months later, a game we should have lost heavily and yet won roared on by the largest away following ever. Don't think we have ever looked back since the relegation twelve months later was followed by Keegans side ripping up the championship for arse paper. These are the luckiest generation of blues ever but us FOCs had some great times along the way.

A few years ago I had a very gloomy prognosis due to bad health. I hung on just in case, and then along came the good Sheik….and I’m still here! I hope he doesn’t get bored for a year or two.
