Simple. They can't take that we are the best team. They need some excuse to blame for their team not winning. "If only the league was based on English players we'd be champions", "If only teams in blue were banned from winning we'd be champions", "If only clubs with British managers were eligible we'd win the league" etc... It's rather pathetic. I don't get why this lot watch sports. They clearly aren't interested in competing for anything. They want to be guaranteed winners with no real competition. What's the point of that? Go to a pawn shop and buy some old trophies. Pretty much the same thing.

I do not read the nyt but would assume this stuff barely scraped past the editors desk.
It has no substance we were all not accutely aware of already, that being we (the whole of english footy) are shite atm regarding quality young english players
It does give a platform to talk rubbish about us though.

There is a reason that the USA does not usually win baseball international series. It usually goes to Japan/Cuba/Dominican R. epublic/ insert as necessary.

It really is a joke, but what else did you expect. Given that he felt the need to point out that Joe Hart was the goalkeeper, I'd say it's aimed at people who know fuck all about football.
