That sounds like the perfect way to describe one group of adult males who for no specific reason meet up with another group for the sole purpose of "having a ruck" In what world is it acceptable to defend this kind of behavior?
Human nature. We might have evolved from cavemen by expanding our technology but we are still essentially cavemen. Humans always have been and always will be a dangerous, violent species. Just because some people have integrated into a calmer society it doesnt mean everyone has and there are anything from doleys to barristers involved in this sort of stuff.

I don't believe that for 1 second, absolute nonsense in fact. If what your saying was true the vast majority of people would indulge in that kind of behavior. A calmer society? Were not wild animals, we have brains more much advanced than any other animal and can certainly refrain from unnecessary violence. Now I'm no evolutionary biologist and I'll stick my neck on the line and say your not either. So it might come as news to you that Neanderthals or cavemen as you put it are a completely separate species to us humans, or our correct title, Homo-sapien
Homo sapiens lived in caves too. We were once cavemen. It's why we have white skin.

How do you explain Moby Dick?

I've never seen Moby's dick!

Rodney's first book was a hard read, you think the publishers would have edited it a bit!

For those who weren't about in those days[and i am not for or against the violence] here is how it went.

If you went to an away game in those days and were sussed out as an away fan you got battered.Forget all that ''We only fought with people who wanted to fight us'' bollocks. That might have been true for some hard core hoolies but there was plenty of others who would glady snipe off couples and the odd fan and take great delight in kicking and stamping you into la la land.So...it was safer to stick together.Sure you were more noticable but you had a fighting chance[no pun intended.]

It was not only away games either.Mobs would come to Maine Road and try and take liberties.By this i mean they would smash places up,kick the shit out of innocent fans, rob and overturn burger vans etcetera. Now you could run, stand and watch or hope the overstretched police would save you and your City.Or you could think,''Fuck that!'' and fight back.So a lot did.

The cockneys i would say were the first firms to be pretty well organised and after that everyone else wised up.So in some ways it started out as standing up for yourself and your club and evolved into a hard core group of game fighters, with a load of lads who would help out if it came on top.Who started it all i have no idea but going to a game it was part and parcel, hooligan or not.

The police made out it was more organised than it was, with generals and lieutenant's,it looked good in the tabloids too,but really it was just the tougher lads leading the rest into having a go,or fighting back. The adrenaline rush of being ambushed by another firm, the danger, the fighting back and seeing them run,the countless laughs[yes there were plenty],the camaraderie became addictive to many so it became a big part of life.

For those who say all football hooligans were cowards i would beg to differ.I have seen many stand and fight against overwhelming odds and come out on top.I have seen them slap bullies, sometimes amongst their own fans and help out non fighters, women and kids being picked on or caught up in it.

It wasn't right or wrong it was just the way it was and part of the game.Is it better now it isn't as prevelant?Without a doubt though sometimes it is too much candyfloss and facepaint for some of the old schools liking.Football has and always will be tribal and if you took that completely away there would be no passion and everyone would sit in half/half scarves in silence clapping politely.

Hmm... I agree one of my main attractions to the club is the tribalism, how it's linked with my ancestry - But seeing everyone enjoying a match, kids with their facepaint and scarves - This puts a bigger smile on my face than having a street fight ever would.

See the fights to me are boring, they usually don't last long enough. messing up expensive clothes and having the possibility of missing the game due to acting up.

Hooliganism had it's day, was a part of football history and myself being a teenager in the 90's found the movies/books/documentaries hugely entertaining.

Hooligans are not needed (more so for a big club like City)
if you're in a gang of lads, acting like pricks, you will attract like for like attention.

The bigger clubs have bigger police budgets. if someone's kicking off they get pulled sooner rather than later... Which is why I find alot of the scrote kids adopting lower league clubs due to their smaller police budgets.

Well who's there to protect our women and kids?
Well if we all behaved and nobody acted like dicks we wouldn't have to have protection.

I act like a right cock in the stadium, proper giving it to the away fans, this for me is just a laugh and I'm doing it many occasions with a smile...
An away fan pointed at me and told me he's going to kill me...I started smiling and shouted When?
He laughed at me.

After the game I'm sharing a drink with the away fans, complementing their support and so on.

I take the result/game just as serious as the next man, but would I want to rip my expensive coat for the sake of a 10second fight & a private company owned by ADUG, and possibly have an expensive dental bill?
No Thanks.

Mansour ain't gonna pay for my cosmetic surgery is he, already had my nose broken a few times.

I've read a couple of these books but the only ones I've ever enjoyed are the novels like Awaydays and The Football Factory. Very few of the autobiographical ones have really captured the emotions of the situation. I know the novels will be based on real events - but only the ones written by professional Authors are good value, IMHO.

For what it's worth, I've never thrown a punch at any football fan in nearly 20 years of going to football. I admit I've been close a couple of times (one in particular who tried to have a go at me but got dragged away by his mates) but I rise above it. Have I ever needed to be "saved" by City Lads before? No.

Your tag says you from Middleton, I find it hard to believe you never thrown a punch at a match then -:)

LOL! If anything, I'm friendly with fairly innocent people who made a mistake once and got banned. I don't want that to happen to me.

Am I right in thinking that City's first 'firm' were mixed race lads who called themselves the 'Kool Kats'. I am pretty sure they came before the Guvenors but I have been wrong before !
