Man City's chase for Crewe youngster Smith approaches a year
By Sportsmail Reporter
Manchester City will not relent in their efforts to sign Dan Smith from Crewe, despite their chase approaching a year.
The highly-rated 16-year-old midfielder is likely to cost them in the region of £250,000.
Crewe boss Steve Davis said: 'There's always been interest from City, but how far forward that has got I don't know.'
City scouts watched the youngster in an Under-18 2-2 draw between Crewe and Stoke in which he scored, on February 18.
The Premier League club attempted to procure the youngster back when Dario Gradi was in charge.
Gradi said the club's refusal to let Smith go was a possible barrier to Crewe picking up talent on loan from city.
'We'd have a complication looking at City now as a club we can get loan players off with them trying to sign one of our young players,' he said in August.
But City's interest stretches back as far as May, with a reported £500,000 bid coming to nothing
