theres wanting your own men, who are good enough for the job, but mancini has just picked his mate. I still cant believe we got rid of cassel.

Because our previous youngsters turned up so ready for the first team, such clever footballers, balanced mentally well ajdusted & great ambassadors for the club ?

a few ended up like that, but we produced players like sturridge, johnson- ( if fit would probably be in the first team, shame), trippier- who is being linked with arsenal. Richards, who have we recently produced at that level ??

So basically, we produced Sturridge (who we pinched from another club) Richards (who we pinched from another club) & Johnson (alcoholic).

You could add, SWP (pinched from another club) Barton (vicious piss head) Ireland (nutcase) Ched Evans, Etuhu, etc etc.

Wheras before the academy people arrived, we produced Paul lake, David White, Hinchcliffe etc etc & previous to that, players like Paul Power, Peter Barnes, Gary Owen etc, all done without any huge investment or academy.

Our academy was a production line of mediocrity which served only to bring in a few quid by selling average players.

Now we are trying to emulate Barca, who bring kids through from five years old & you think a system which failed to produce one single home grown Premier League standard attacking player, in over ten years, was better than what we have now ?

Whether we took them from other clubs has nothing to do with the U21 coaching staff... their job is simply to move them from the youth setup to the first team, which Cassell did. whether or not they have played for city since they were 5 or not has nothing to do with the U21 manager. The facts are simple since 2008 no player has passed through our U21 side that would be capable of competing for a place in the team today. Before 2008 we had Richards and Sturridge who had both come through the U18s and reserves and are now Top 4 quality players and Nedum Onouha (sp) was breaking into the side. Whatever Cassell's limitations were you can bet that if you gave him the likes of Suarez and Rekik he would have them a lot closer to the first team than they are now. Then it would be up to Mancini to make the decision to give them a chance or not but right now he doesn't need to because none of them are good enough.

There has been a lot said about the level difference between now and when Cassell was around but barring Guidetti who is only at his level because of a year at Feyenoord there isn't one player in our U21s that could break into the starting lineup of a relegation battling PL side never mind the champions. Its down to the U21 coaching staff to develop them to that level so the club can arrange a loan move that will develop the players.

Of-course the players in OUR youth side are more than good enough to play in the Premier League. They need opportunity that s all in an environment that doesn't shatter their confidence. How else do you think youngsters slip in to other Premiership sides from the lower leagues and adapt.Bet they don't have to put up with their own fans harping on about how crap they are, all the time, like our forums.Give the lads a break...what they need is encouragement.
This snobbery of someone having to pay 20million pounds for you before you are considered good enough for the first team is just ridiculous and is doing our youngsters and our club a massive disservice. All I ever see on this site is people name dropping Suarez, Rekik and Razak...the latter two not been involved with U21/EDS for some time.....what about the other home grown lads that ARE playing.Makes me think a lot of these posts are by agents or sports management companies hyping player profiles.

Suarez needs to go out on loan to a championship club. He will develop to be one hell of a player. Just hope this idiot doesn't ruin him as a player.

No one wants him, he is a luxury player.

I think Mancini put Lombardo there just to spite Marwood.

I think we will see Lombardo move back to being one of the first team coaches and then U21 and below will be dealt with by Txiki mainly and Vieira etc.

The manager of the EDS should never have any affinity to the manager of the first team. It needs continuity, stability and should be run completely separate.

Does Lombardo really care about the futures of these players? Why should he when he won't be here in 3 months or even 3 years?

Hermann Gerland has been manager and now assistant manager of Bayern Munich II and during his stability there he has brought through Hamann, Hargreaves, Hummels, Kroos, Lahm, Badstuber, Muller, Alaba and Ottl.

There have been 4 managers since 2003 at Barcelona B, all former players who have love for the club and you can see what they have brought through.

Anyone who has managed Yong Ajax has a past connection and love for the club.

Apart from Ricky Sbragia United have had managers since 1991 that have a connection with the club in charge of their reserves.

I keep hearing how we want to emulate Barca but we need to emulate United first and to do that needs stability.

Totally agree with this. Hopefully will be something Txiki sorts out. And I hope the club doesn't lose sight of the importance of winning at junior levels as well as player development.

^ Who with a past connection to our club is qualified to run the EDS though? We're handicapped because our club was on a much lower level in the past. All we have to choose from is some old school British style manager like Dickov or Lomas. Uwe is doing very well at Brentford but his ambitions probably extend beyond reserve team football. Vieira does seem to have genuine interest in the future of our club so when he completes his coaching badges maybe he should take charge of the U21s if he wants the job. But probably better to find one of Txiki's old pals who is willing to be here for the long run. Segura maybe? <a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Segura" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Segura</a>

Do you honestly belive that Suarez for example could take someone like Mcarthy or Maloney's place in the Wigan starting lineup at the weekend? There is no doubt that the potential is there but at this moment he neither has the mental attributes or the physicality to play at PL level. He clearly has bags of technical ability but only a mixture of good coaching and guidance plus football at a level above that of their current lel will give them the mental attributes clearly suarez is recievin neither at the moment

You have a point, in the meantime though we need someone long term.

Cassell had the right idea. Run the academy/reserves separate and when they are ready to be part of the first team squad them send them up to Carrington. The first team manager should have no major input.

It's hard to get a quality long-term reserve/youth manager because if they are very good usually someone will soon come knocking for a position as a first team manager.
