FT: 6-3 to Spurs. Lopes, Glendon, Bunn for City. Kane hattrick for Spurs.

Would I be right in guessing their team probably had a few years on ours?

I read Sandro was in their side, but don't know about the rest.

Why weren't some of our first teamer's available, those who'll take no part of tonight's game?

Spurs U21 team: Archer; Alex McQueen, Kevin Stewart, Ball, Fryers; Falque, Sandro, Carroll, Townsend; Bentelab; Kane

Sandro played an hour as he returns from 8 months out following torn ACL injury

The others, Carroll and Townsend, were unused subs yesterday @ Crystal Palace.

Ages of Spurs squad:

Archer (20), Alex McQueen (18), Kevin Stewart (18), Dominic Ball (18), Zeki Fryers (20), Iago Falque (23), Sandro (23), Carroll (21), Townsend (21), Bentaleb (18), Kane (19).... SUBS: Jonathan Miles (GK) (20), Shaq Coulthirst (18), Giancarlo Gallifuoco (18), Laste Dombaxe (17)

So only Sandro in terms of first team players, Carroll & Townsend more experienced than the rest... still relatively young side for U21's, 7 still eligible for the U18's and still missing 4 or 5 players who helped us reach the U21 PL Final...

23yrs = 2
21yrs = 2
20yrs = 3
19yrs = 1
18yrs = 6
17yrs = 1

Avge age: 19.5

Compared to City team:

Angus Gunn (17), Adam Drury (19), Gregory Leigh (18), Jason Denayer (18), Mathias Bossearts (18), George Evans (18), Sinan Bytygi (18), Louis Hutton (18), Jordi Hiwula (18), Marcos Lopes (17), Oliver Ntcham (17).... SUBS: Harry Bunn (20), Ian Lawlor (GK) (18), George Glendon (18), Emyr Huws (19), Ellis Plummer (18)

23yrs = 0
21yrs = 0
20yrs = 1
19yrs = 2
18yrs = 10
17yrs = 3

Avge Age: 18

Much younger side for City, whether that is due to their being a 1st team game tonight, or, as I suspect, MC U18 and U21 sides are playing a year or so above their age group (as the average ages prove)... this has pluses and minuses as today's result shows... Shows how short of players we were, only 4 subs incl. keeper and not 5 as City had...

Having seen quite a lot of our U21/U18 sides, Spurs have been "grooming" this group of players for 4-5 years now and it is beginning to reap rewards..

Caulker (sadly sold as he wanted to be first choice, but £9m for a home grown player is testimony to the academy working), Townsend, Carroll, Kane all around the first team and will feature more as the season progresses... missing today's game Bale's twin, Kenny McEvoy (google him, you will see what I mean) along with Milos Veljkavic, Ryan Fredericks, Jon Obika, Roman Michael-Percil, Cristian Ceballos, Souleymane Coulibaly... who all starred in the U18's/U21's last season and NextGenSeries

Spoke to someone who was at the game today and said he was impressed with how MC kept going at 5-1, heads never dropped, played some good football, but were undone defensively by Carroll, Kane and Townsend...

I like the approach City are taking, give young players the chance to compete and play against older players. However, it is disappointing when results are not good. A spirited performance today but whether it is youngsters or not they need to get better results. At the end of the day it doesn't really mean much them playing in a consistent side as when it comes to the first team only one or two will make it. It is good to expose them at a young age as it will make them learn and learn quickly and the players will no doubt benefit and improve from that experience. Spurs have done well in terms of their youth acquisition and academy. It was vital that City addressed their issues and hopefully under the guidance of Vieira etc they will make that step up and in a couple of years make the transition into the first team.

17-year-old Ntcham against 24-year-old Brazil midfielder and one of the best holding midfielders in the league Sandro is bound to be a bit of a mismatch, innit?

LoveCity... I agree entirely.. however, we have a player who for the last 2 seasons has only managed half a season due to injuries coming back from an 8 month lay off, who needs match practice... Having now upgraded our midfield from THud, Livermore & Parker, to Paulinho, Capoue, Dembele over the last year or so, we can allow Sandro time to get fit properly in the hope he plays the whole season... these are the only games where he can get that match fitness.. On the whole, I don't agree with allowing the likes of Sandro in the U21's, but with no reserves football as such, you have to make allowances... Personally, I think 1 overage player or a max. of 2 (as you get late developers like Falque in our side).

The current rule of 3 plus a goalkeeper takes the p*ss a little.

We played United last season, Lindegaard in goal, Scholes, Fletcher, Cleverley all played against, at the time a very inexperienced side we had... we lost 2-1 up there... just think that makes a mockery...

Carroll, Townsend, Kane, all have 1st team or loan experience, but are all eligible just in the age group... they need these games or else they would not get game time... that or they go on loan... as they all did last season...

Your academy sides will take 4-5 years from the start to start bearing fruit (1st team squad players), in that time you might uncover a real gem that makes it through as a regular... it does not happen overnight, no matter how much money is involved... top facilities, attract top youngsters... as Spurs have now realised with the new training complex.. I am sure MC will get there with their youngsters...

It was a warm afternoon with a lot of threatening clouds for Spurs first home game of the season. There was a press conference for a cancer awareness campaign being launched at the club so look out for the team wearing T-shirts on Sunday. Spurs gave a run out to the un-used subs from yesterday's game at Palace with Sandro as well, whilst City came with a young side as their first team are playing Newcastle this evening.

Spurs lined up with Archer in goal behind Ball and Fryers with McQueen at right back and Stewart on the left. Sandro anchored the midfield with Bentaleb and Carroll alongside him. Kane led the line with Falque on his right and Townsend on his left.

Spurs kicked off the first half attacking the south end and were quickly into their passing game, taking an early lead when Kane, with his back to goal, laid the ball back for Carroll to drive low past Gunn from just outside the area. City responded with an attack down the left by Ntcham, who put in a hard low cross that Stewart put out for a corner. From the corner Spurs broke out via Kane who sent Falque away for an effort that was wide.

Spurs were using the width of the pitch well and Townsend played Kane in for a shot that was saved. Kane drifted out wide to collect and put in a good cross that was missed by white shirts closing in. Ball headed wide from a corner before Hiwula had the visitors' first effort, firing wide after being played through by Lopes.

Sandro headed wide from another corner as Spurs kept the pressure on. Kane was wide again from Falque's centre before he was played through by Carroll for a one-on-one with Gunn to score Spurs second. The striker almost got a second when he ran onto a cross from Falque to put it into the net but the flag was raised for offside.

Lopes won the ball near the halfway line and held off a couple of challenges to score low to Archer's right bringing the score back to 2-1. Sandro fired over just before the whistle at the end of the half.

There were no changes for the start of the second half which saw an early chance for Kane when Falque crossed the ball. Harry could not get it out of his feet before a defender cleared it. The reprieve was short lived as Townsend got down the left and crossed for Falque coming in at the far post. The Spaniard took a few touches to control it and move inside, before whipping it in from two yards.

Carroll linked up with Townsend on the left before chipping a lovely ball into the middle for the advancing Kane to steer past the exposed Gunn for his second, and Spurs fourth. Townsend had an effort that flew over before Spurs began to settle back looking to maintain possession and hit City on the break.

City made their second change and began to push forward, putting players under pressure. Townsend beat the offside trap to get down the left and whip in a cross that Kane turned into the net, arriving late at the near post. Sandro came off to be replaced by Dombaxe.

Bunn won the ball in the middle and avoided Ball's tackle to go clear for a one-on-one with Archer, slipping the ball under the keeper to pull a goal back. Gunn saved from Townsend and also from Carroll's free kick before Spurs made a second change. Coulthirst came on to work the left side with Townsend moving to the right and Falque dropping into the middle. McQueen was the player to go off and Spurs played with three at the back.

With City pushing forward it allowed Drury to get down the right and cross for Glendon to get another goal back. The game became more end to end as Ntcham fired over before Carroll drove wide. In the last minute of the game Townsend got down the right and put in a cross that found its way to Coulthirst to score Spurs sixth.

This was another good win for Spurs as their experience was too much for the City youngsters. Thus Spurs took their total of goals scored to ten in two games. A hat-trick for Harry Kane should help his confidence, and good performances from Townsend and Carroll should keep them in contention for a first team place. Sandro also had a good work out to help his match fitness without being too stretched.

The U-21s go to Upton Park on Friday evening without Bentaleb who was sent off at Chelsea. The Hammers won their first game 3-0 against Villa and are playing Everton this evening. It will be interesting to see who travels to Tbilisi for the Europa League tie the day before as this will effect the U-21 team on Friday night

A harsh lesson but a valuable one against an experienced Spurs side and hopefully our lads will gain a lot from the result.

Was Fofana injured?
Haha always talking about Fofana mate!
Doubt it, it's just that Ntcham and fofana are both very talented and they tempt to switch so 1 game ntcham play another game fofana plays.
