However I would say that a new opposition leader, 15 months out from a general election facing the most unpopular prime minister in polling history, would feel confident of putting up a good challenge at least. Strange how it eventually became a huge defeat (biggest since 1945) in such a short time frame. Would the Tories have managed this without the conflict? Maybe, but as the recession was still in hold across most of the country I would have said not. I seem to recall pundits stating the women's vote making a big difference at the time, were they had failed to identify with Foot and been impressed by Thatcher's strong image.
No worries about the choice of words. We all use imprecise language from time to time. Even me ;-)
In 1983 the Tory share of the vote actually fell compared to 1979 but they gained 58 seats.
Due completly to the Labour party split and rise of the SDP and there pact with the Liberals splitting the left wing vote.
Thatcher got 13m votes, Labour and SDP/Libs combined got over 16M votes Thatcher won 397 seats... Labour....with SDP/libs won 232 combined.
As a result we got the unfettered neo liberalism that has failed us as a country, increased inequality and made the UK a damn sight more of a miserable place to live than if the fucking gang of four hadnt been such traitors.

When they sadly get reelected these promises will mysteriously disappear into more cuts to the poor and tax breaks for his posh pals. The EU referendum will also be forgotten about along with the promises to the Scots.
His Hypocrisy knows know bounds comparing leaving his kid in the pub to a speech gaff by an opposition leader and don't get me started on him wheeling out his disabled son every conference in front of the cameras when millions of others are being slowly euthanised by his parties policies.
Totally agree. Despicable use of his deceased son for political advantage whilst overseeing the dismantling of the NHS should tell you all you need to know about the morals of this man.

The real traitors were the nutcases in the Labour party that wanted to move it so far to the left.
The shame was that the SDP didnt manage to break through, pick up a sizeable number of seats, see off Foot, Benn & co and provide a genuine alternative to Thatcher

Check my post about the Labour party manifesto of 83.
Its now pretty much mainstream thought. Dont buy into the myth created by the rwnj press.

They wanted to Nationslise the biggest 100 companies. Why not 99 or 101? What an utterly insane notion.
How is that fundamental and totemic election pledge in any way mainstream?
Given the 'tax take' from North Sea Oil I doubt Nationalising it would have made much difference to Treasury coffers. An insane percentage of North Sea Oil revenue goes to the government.Rascal said:gordondaviesmoustache said:It isn't though is it?

Every manifesto has there odd bit.
I would have been more targetted and made it the top 10,000 companies. 100 is a ridiculously low figure to achieve.
Funny how you didnt concentrate on the nationalisation of North Sea oil, which Norway did btw. Thatcher used North Sea oil reciepts to cut taxes rather than start the National Investment Bank Labour advocated. Imagine how different the UK would look today if Labours plan had succeeded. Many things that came to pass simply would never have happened and we might have had an infrastructure to be proud of, a health service that wasnt falling apart enough social housing for those who need housing.
I remember Thatcher cutting my tax from 33% to 30% i think at first and i got a whopping extra £1 i didnt need in my pay packet.
If any manifesto was the longest suicide note in UK history in 1983 its turned out to be the Tory one that well under 40% of the total electorate voted for.
cibaman said:A manifesto has to be right in its own time not 30 years later. You cant really compare Labour's promise to take the UK out of the Common Market as it existed in 1983 to the offer of a referendum now. Its comparing apples and oranges.
