Gutted for Purito, how many times can one man come 2nd!! Can't really fathom what Valverde was thinking in not following Costa, it must surely be that he didn't have the legs because otherwise he's messed up tactically yet again.
Regarding JTL, I read that he has suffered from Chronic Fatigue in the recent past. It's a condition I've struggled with the last seven years, and through my own dealings with medical specialists I'm aware that one of it's characteristics is that sufferers tend to display irregular blood patterns, especially when the condition is at it's severest. It's perfectly possible therefore that the vigorous training scheme SKY have him on has triggered a mini re-lapse and that his blood readings are strange but for above board reasons. That would of course also account for his significant drop in performance. I don't blame the UCI for asking questions though, it's good that they have and absolutely understandable, but fingers crossed he's innocent.
I wanted Purito to win as well. What a hard days riding that was though.
As for JTL its a strange one, if he has medical back up then he should be ok,
but it does seem weird he did so well last year and has dropped off this year, at a better financed and sourced team. I'm glad Cookson was elected head of the UCI, he will take anti doping even further than it currently is, which can only be good for the integrity of the sport.
Absolutely, that's why I don't blame the UCI for investigating. From what I've read today when he was at Endura he wouldn't have been subject to the blood passport (would only have bloods taken when winning races), where as now he's at World Tour level he obviously is. When you couple that with the dramatic drop off in performance, it's only right they take a close look. I'm hopeful though that he may be genuine and it just perhaps the over training that has left his tank empty, because from my own experience I do think that's believable.
This is where the blood values things is difficult though. CFS is a condition that even specialists in the field are still struggling to understand, so in that sense it's a ready made excuse for someone who wants to mask or explain away blood doping. Froome's Bilharzia would fit in to the same category. That's not to say that either Chris or Jon are lying, just that it's possible people can cite these conditions safe in the knowledge that it's difficult for medics to say 'nope that's implausible'. Then you have Horner's blood details that he released last work; more informed eyes than me seem to feel they are very suspicious but because they fit within the wide parameters they are deemed acceptable. Don't get me wrong the blood passport is a good thing and I'm glad cycling utilise it but it's far from fool proof and I hope Cookson does do whatever he can to continue pushing for the best and most rounded anti doping controls.
That's virtually it for the season now, just Lombardia of any note to go really. I'll do my end of season awards this week :)
