The US, UK and Russia all guaranteed Ukraine's borders. Russia has now apparently breached that memorandum.

It seems clear that Crimea will end up being part of Russia and there's nothing that Ukraine or the West can do about it. It's surprising that it was given to Ukraine in the first place as 60% of the population is Russian anyway with only 25% Ukrainian. They'll probably hold a referendum to legitimise the takeover at some point.

It will go the same way as Georgia. Putin is a politician first and a tyrant second. He is playing to the crowd. His country is all but bankrupt, there is a massive lack of organisation there. He is doing what Israel do and pursuing a hard ball policy. It's deflection. Let's just hope the west don't bite. Germany need to sort this one out I.suspect! I wonder how many Russians are appreciating their leaderships posturings!

Until the US start sending in parachutes full of quality gear they are bog standard.

The US will deny this of course.

But it'll end with the Crimea annexed and some sort of boycott of Russian vegetables etc...

A quick google says that their forces are decent and been deployed all around the world, have strong military links with Poland
Wouldn't last long against the Russkies though

Ukraine is also on its own. It is certainly a partner-country of Nato but it has none of the security guarantees that membership of the Atlantic Alliance would bring. There is simply no question of Nato becoming militarily involved in this crisis.

Russia was from the outset in the driving seat in the Crimea. Its deployments there dwarf Ukraine's limited forces in the region.

You should have seen that state owned 'supermarket' during the commie era, 'GUM' I think the state name was, Pre packed packs of pork fat, some very strange hats, the most tacky cutlery you've ever seen, and female assistants with faces like bashed crabs, (not like the luscious supermodel type you see now on holiday.)
