"The Sancho Narrative" vs patience

Hmm not sure - since he made that prediction, Sancho has won 2 trophies with Dortmund and one with United, racked up 76 G+A in 82 games for Dortmund, got an £80m transfer with a £65m contract.

Not sure id describe that as being “nowhere”, despite his ongoing struggles at United.
I think there is a decent player in there, somewhere, just needs game time and belief in him. Not so sure about his mindset however as IMO this was why he was 'allowed' to leave and why we didn't take up an option to resign him...

He wasn’t “allowed” to leave, the club offered him the biggest contract ever offered to a 17 year old in this country and he turned it down repeatedly.

If it were up to City, he’d still be a city player.

As for there being a player in there…I’m not sure. There was an amazing player there, we all saw that at Dortmund, but he’s at a club that ends careers for fun, he’s become the punching bag of the moment for United fans and fans in general and seemingly has had such a bad mental health episode last season he had to leave work for 4 months. That’s not easy to come back from.

I don't think there's any one route through to success, it will be different for every player in every position in every club.

What I would say though is that for a footballer, your career is short and the path to the top is very tricky. It can be ended by a bad fall or late tackle. There's plenty of players who were destined for greatness who fell by the way side - Robinho, Adebayor, Joao Felix and Balotelli all could've been world class if they had the attitude of Tevez, Aguero and Haaland.

We also have to remember that for some players, they aren't bothered about being the next Messi but want to make sure that they earn as much as they possibly can in their careers. You only have to read about some of the backgrounds they've come from to realise that looking after your extended family for life and generations is a phenomenal achievement in itself.

If you want to be the best in the world, my advice to any footballer would be almost to seek out the managers who will make you grow. Sancho made the correct decision to go to Dortmund and they helped him grow and become a good young, regular player in a team that regularly plays in the CL. The coaches, manager and whole club set up was geared to taking rough diamonds and polishing them and you only have to look at the likes of Haaland, Bellingham, Dembele, Gundogan, Aubameyang etc etc to see they have a record of doing that.

Sancho's biggest mistake was picking the wrong move from Dortmund. Some of this is hindsight and I'm not sure who else was realistically in for him but a team like City, Liverpool, Arsenal (at the moment) would've been the perfect move. The managers at these clubs improve players and have a plan for them - regardless of age - and have a track record of doing that. City have taken Foden, Zinchenko, Rice in recent years and made them into players who look at home in the best team in the world - that's a phenomenal achievement in itself. He's also done the same with Ortega, Akanji and the players who've gone to other clubs are doing well. Klopp's done the same with Salah, Mane, Firmino, VVD, TAA etc and Arsenal have done similar with Odegaard, Saka and the defender who's name I forget.

Sancho joins the sorry list of players who went to OT and killed their careers. Him and Maguire must wonder what could've been. Their next moves will be to teams outside the top 4 and they will have to rebuild and take years backwards steps. Maguire will lose his England spot and any chance of winning a national tournament. I'd be amazed given the abuse he gets if he's not mentally unwell either. It's appalling some of the abuse he receives, regardless of who he plays for.

Look at Sterling going to Chelsea, his career is over now at the top level. Cole Palmer might find he loses enough early years to mean he will never play for a top 4 club again and that he spends most of his time at a team like West Ham hoping that Spurs take a chance on him.

It really does astonish me that more players don't think about their moves and careers. If you were a banking exec going for the top job, you'd think twice before going to a company that's on the downward slope despite the pay.

Iv always viewed the Sancho case as a great example of the power of agents in football. At every stage of his career, even as a teenager at city, the agents have used the media extensively to boost the profile of the player. Have you ever seen so many reports on an academy player that had left? Then he was rewarded with an England spot and a lucrative move... all based not on talent but business arrangements. Now sitting on 300k a week and doing fuck all everyone wins

The continued overreaction to Chelsea's struggles keeps going I see.

6 months ago Liverpool were 8th and Spurs were looking like getting pushed out of the top 4 forever. Now they're our main title rivals along with Arsenal who were in the doldrums 15 months ago.

You would have said Saka was throwing his career away by tying himself to a 5 year contract at Arsenal 2 years ago.

Football changes quickly.

I don't think it is an over reaction, I am saying specifically that -as it stands now - young players who join City, Liverpool, Arsenal and of vourse Brighton can reasonably expect to do so and improve. They may not make it but they will improve because the managers and clubs have to some extent a record of improving players.

Chelsea have a habit of buting a lot and buying big and apart from James and Terry there aren't as many successes there.

This isnt to say that they can't challenge, or won't challenge of course With the right manager then Chelsea should be challengers. But they don't have that yet.

Also I said at the start of the season that Liverpool were our main rivals and I stand by that. Klopp is 2nd only to Pep in my view and has a habit of turning players into world class ones. Arteta looks like a version of Pep and has undoubtedly done a brilliant job there too.

Cant believe how much generosity there is on here towards a player who stabbed City in the back and sold his arse to the rags. Im inclined to agree with the Leeds fans.
Dirty red bastard, he let the country down.

Putting things into perspective the Rags paid £80m for Slabhead and paid Sanchez £500k a week , they are clueless , but agree about his time at Dortmund his progress was rapid and looked an excellent player , his biggest mistake was taking a big fat contract at the Rags with a manager who was a laughing stock. No doubt Sancho's agent was thinking more about his 10% cut than the lads career , if he can find the right club with the right coach there is definitely a very good player in there. But he will again have to leave Manchester for his career to progress , dejavu ?

Sancho was also left out of the Dortmund squad for a while for disciplinary reasons.

Top talent on the sidelines: Jadon Sancho puts himself on the sidelines at BVB [Dortmund].

Wednesday, November 13, 2019, 11:15 p.m

After the 4-0 defeat against FC Bayern, a lot of things are being put to the test at Borussia Dortmund. Jadon Sancho attracted negative attention - and not for the first time this season. The top talent is at a crossroads: both athletically and off the pitch.

After 36 minutes, Jadon Sancho's working day in Munich was over. Coach Lucien Favre had seen enough and substituted Raphael Guerreiro for the youngster. In an extremely weak Dortmund team, which was 0-1 behind at the time, the 19-year-old was one of the weakest.

The suggestion that Sancho was still suffering from the after-effects of a strain he suffered in the 3-2 win against Inter Milan in midweek was not confirmed by Dortmund's coach after the game, although he did note that the youngster had suffered "little" during the week "trained". “He wasn’t injured,” said Favre. "Today he just wasn't good enough."

BVB statistics of horror: Sancho was under-performing against Bayern
The statistics clearly support this judgment. Nine out of twelve duels lost, 13 ball losses - the 19-year-old's numbers from the Bayern game are a truly horrific result. But what might be more worrying for those in charge is Sancho's tendencies - both athletically and off the pitch.

His start to the season got off to a flying start. Sancho impressed everyone with eight scorer points in the first five games (three goals, five assists), but then fell off. The Englishman only gave an assist against Freiburg. After the international break in October, things got even worse.

After the international break, Sancho's crisis at BVB began
Before the important game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Favre left his winger out of the BVB squad, but did not want to comment further on the reason. "It's a disciplinary matter, everything else remains internal," said the coach after the 1-0 win. Michael Zorc went into more detail, saying that Sancho “tests the limits every now and then”. You are then there to set them.

As it later became known, the 19-year-old had returned late from the English national team and, in addition to the temporary suspension, was also handed a fine of 100,000 euros. However, delays for Sancho should be more the rule than the exception.

Sancho brings back memories of Dembélé and Aubameyang at BVB
“Sancho is late so often that you don’t even count anymore,” an insider from “Sky Sport News HD” is quoted as saying. Especially if you know Dortmund's history with highly gifted but undisciplined players like Ousmane Dembélé or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the alarm bells should ring for some people in charge. In his first BVB season, Sancho was repeatedly noticed for being late and was therefore temporarily transferred to the U23 team as a penalty.

Even though sports director Michael Zorc defended the 19-year-old and called him a "good boy" who grew up quickly and "still has to learn a few things": Sancho's time for puppy protection is over. This is shown by both the temporary suspension a few weeks ago and the events and statements during the Bayern debacle.

Sancho's crisis is causing a dilemma for Favre and BVB
Sancho is currently back with the national team, where - or rather after - the trouble began in October. The winger wants to qualify for the 2020 European Championships with England and find his way back to his “old” strength. That would also help BVB and Favre, who are in a quandary.

On the one hand, the 19-year-old wouldn't do any harm to take a break to think. On the other hand, Borussia needs a Sancho in top form to survive the next crisis that threatens after the Bayern debacle. The other wingers either don't perform consistently well (Hazard, Guerreiro), play better in a different position (Brandt) or are needed elsewhere (Hakimi).

At BVB, Sancho already has a lot of responsibility for a player who is only 19 years old. The Englishman has to ignore these and the ongoing rumors about a move and possible future clubs. Only then can he overcome the first major blip in his career and get back on track. That would make BVB happy both sportingly and financially at some point and could save Favre's job. Otherwise, the Swiss faces a similar fate to Niko Kovac.

He's definitely not going going anywhere at the moment.
Can't even join Shaw in the canteen!

how to mess up your career but earn lots of money !
At this moment in time you arent doing your self any favours signing for rags, but of course bank balance will be nice.

Sancho not even worth a thread on here. City business wise have done very well from him though.

I feel like Jadon could have benefitted from his manager keeping quiet rather than publicly revealing he was training with the kids or was out of shape. Some issues are best kept in house. He clearly hasn't responded well to his manager so far, but equally as with Cancelo, sometimes the player doesn't fit and has to go. Ultimately he's sat there earning a fortune and probably needs to move to re-focus.

A lot of players are motivated by improving and winning things and they aren't too focussed on the financial side. Phil got his head down and was rewarded. He's now a major part of one of the best sides the world has seen. I feel like Cole could have done the same thing. He was as close to our first team as he is Chelsea's and we're challenging for major titles whilst they're a work in progress. But he would have had to wait a long time to earn the money he currently is, and he clearly thought he'd play more there than with us and wanted to go and earn the big wages now.

If you were given the choice of mega bucks and Chelsea or a fair bit less and Liverpool you have to weigh up what you want to achieve. Liverpool are still a work in progress and you know at Chelsea they've got the cash to quite quickly transform into a successful side given time, whereas Liverpool are less likely to invest. You also get to live in posh London on big money rather than Liverpool. Sometimes it's as simple as that.

Yeah, he's outstripped fodens achievements during that time. Must have been a success then. Look at where they are now though, one is a success the other is literally nowhere (Or playing FIFA whilst his team play football).

His mindset is shite, he's lost to it I think, add into that that his 'skills' are in taking players on, speed, dribbling, having his mind in the sweet spot, enthusiasm, all the thing that come easily in youth.... I think his best days are over and in a few years time he will be playing where the spotlight dont shine.

Unless he apologises that is and takes part in ten hags project because only that way will he learn the disciplines required to have a successful career... Or he can wing it and do it his own way, which is what he seems to do all the time.

99% of players need to leave to get regular football but most are kicked out. He did very well finding his feat at BD going abroad in his teens. If he hadn't done well there wouldn't be a thread on him like the hundreds or thousands of others that leave.

City don't have patience with most players unless they have mistakenly given them massive contracts and have to live with it. It is a 2 way thing.

Didn't Ten Hag give him 3 months off last season to sort himself out. There was very little mention of it via official channels. I think the Arsenal bombshell was a last resort, because if he doesn't respond to a softly softly approach, lets see how he reacts to people actually knowing that he is a total waster who doesn't turn up to training on time. Or that he is up all night playing xbox, and is not fit. Got kicked out of the England squad for turning up late to a meeting. Went AWOL when at Dortmund and turned up a day late to pre-season. Flies off on holiday after matches, then turns up late for training not in any fit state to train. The lad is bad news. He does what he wants, and won't listen to good advice. There's no helping someone like that.

It was all over the news that he wasn't fit and was training with the youth team.
