The Scottish Politics thread

Namely?

The accession process is well documented and as much as we might welcome Scotland ‘back in’, it knows that it will have to pass certain criteria at certain times, which I have no doubt it will.

It'll be fast tracked as a previous member and an obvious ally plus the Eu would welcome their gas and power production.

Pre existing member. EC have already confirmed this.
It was part of a pre-existing member, yes, but I haven’t seen the Commission confirm anything and would be surprised if it did. Ex-politicians have said that it could be as quick as Finland’s accession, 2-3 years, but one has to remember that Finland was already both an independent state and an existing member of the EFTA; Scotland is currently neither.
`
The mood in the EU would certainly be welcoming, but SNP politicians know that it will still have to decouple from rUK and then meet the criteria, which I reckon could be done in around 5 years. It’s already over 6 since Brexit so that’s not really that long.

This thread has been silent for months. Are we Scot’s still winging parasites or is the consensus now that we have a bona fides case for independence?
Sturgeon has been using some pretty strong language this week. Will that help or harm her case?
when oh when will Liz phone that attention seeker?
So many questions.
Don’t think the legal avenue is going to prove decisive either way.

Brexit, Pandemic, Cost of Living Crisis, War in Ukraine, Next thing, Next thing, Next thing…. The U.K. government cannot continue to use such excuses and insist every year that ‘now is not the right time’. That is unhealthy for democracy.

Nah if the Scots get independence they can come straight back in, there's special circumstances.
I tend to agree with that irrespective of financial criteria. Membership of the euro might have to wait until certain criteria are met though. Until then we can always use Sterling with some of the associated downside.

I think many people are realising that democracy is not all it should be in the UK. Even Tory voters didn’t vote for the current ‘plan’.

That would be an interesting topic. I suspect Scotland might try and wrestle some of the ownership back from the current owners and learn from Norway albeit it’s late in the day. We also have massive wind produced electricity.

Just because people might want it to happen doesn’t mean it can be accelerated. That would not be popular with those MS that have taken years to join and give false hopes to other prospective candidates. The EU needs to consider the wider picture.

Decoupling from rUK would take years in itself, and there would need to be agreement in Scotland, which currently there is not, on what route to take if joining the EU. A couple of years old now but still pertinent.

Three years I would think.
Scotland will seek to rejoin and commence discussions during the transition phase away from UK. Where there is a will there is a way.
