The Scottish Politics thread

Can I ask what they do about the military and in particular the nuclear sub base? Will Scotland lay claim to them and the airbases etc

I believe that the SNP have already said that they want rid of the Nuclear stuff.... I suppose the rest will be up to negotiation and agreement (American bases in the UK and British bases in Cyprus etc)

I've just looked up 'the UK National Debt'. It seems that it is in excess of £2,000 billion. What proportion of this would Scotland cough up were they to vote for independence? Or would it be deducted from any payout of what Sturgeon perceives is owed?

Scotland doesn't have any debt.... not allowed to borrow under devolution rules.

She said legally there is no requirement, however morally there is a requirement that would be negotiated, as would a share of the national assets.

True, but taking my wife as an example, she was a fairly strong No last time, now she is wavering and is interested in reading this and using it to decide. So there will be people searching out information this time that didn't last time.
Grandfather to Mrs Lloydie's kids, about as middle Scotland as you could get, ex British Army Major, was staunchly remain, now staunchly (though regretfully) pro independence. It's been quite an education listening to his conversion over the last 6 years.

Sturgeon is a very good politician, but I don't think anyone has done more for Scottish independence among non SNP, traditional unionists supporters over the last 6 -7 years than the conservative party.

This was the most recent position on Trident. Wether the events this year have changed that stance is unknown.

A Scottish government white paper, “Scotland’s Future”, published back in 2013, signalled the government's intention of removing nuclear weapons from UK bases in Scotland, including the Trident nuclear program, should Scotland become independent. It was from this that the British government recognised that the threat to the UK’s current nuclear deterrence posture became genuine. The Scottish government’s position is unlikely to change, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reiterating her party’s position that nuclear weapons are “immoral, ineffective and a waste of money”.

As a result of the possibility of Scottish independence, the British government gave considerable thought to where it could move the Trident missiles and Vanguard submarines in England and Wales. Some analysts, however, have speculated that given the incompatibility of several of the UK’s potential host sites, coupled with the implications of hosting nuclear weapons near population centres and the overall cost of relocation (with expected net costs to be £2.5 billion and overall costs expected to reach £20 billion) could lead the British government to completely abandon its nuclear weapons program.

He sounds like he has been in a similar journey to many of us.

Both liabilities and assets will be negotiated. She has already said Scotland will take its fair share. What’s fair will be interesting.
