To be honest the majority of their singles were poorly placed in the charts. Morrissey blaming Rough Trade for a lack of promotion + day time Radio 1 pretty much refused to play them

Considering they were on an indie label they did ok in the charts.
I'm sure they could have signed to a major if they'd wanted but had less artistic control
And they turned down the world tour with the Police !
