Unfortunately it would seem my fears were well founded. Ok, there were mitigating circumstances, conceding a goal after only 3 minutes didn't help matters, and neither did giving people something else to do rather than sing (albeit launching paper at the stewards). However you'd have thought that, as this singing section was formed directly as a result of fan requests, those who chose to sit in it would have made a bit more of an effort to get some singing going. The atmosphere last night was really pretty poor, and I don't think it was coincidental that this coincided with the away fans being up in the Gods. For me I'd say the experiment didn't work. Should it be given another go? Possibly, although I'm not convinced the outcome would be any better.
I keep reading about the atmosphere created due to the interaction with the away fans. But it seems to me from where I sit that whenever there's a half decent away turnout, the outcome of this interaction is nearly always that the away fans win. It may not be apparent to those in the SS at the time but in the rest of the ground, when it comes to exchanging songs, the away fans are noisier. The City fans in SS are noisiest when they're singing the old staples supporting the team. And there's more chance of those songs being picked up by the rest of ground. Only then do the City fans make more noise than the away fans.
Having the away fans in the SS does nothing to improve overall noise levels in support of City.
this exactly, we definitely need operation one end.
