The Spark that created the fire! (Mark Hughes)

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

Anyone who manages a top premier league club can manage to bring in a couple of players that will turn out to be gems. Its also very easy to sign a right load of shite on long contracts and be tactically inept.

For someone who bought so brilliantly from overseas, I find it baffling that he spent such obscene money bringing in much more average players who had Premier League experience going for them.

Think he's an excellent manager on a budget. His success at Blackburn is why he got the City job and likewise his success at Fulham got him the QPR job. He's doing a cracking job at Stoke too.

The domestic signings were tactical at the time and everyone is aware that you pay a premium for British (or more generally Premier league) players.
In buying Lescott, etc they were weakening the opposition and strengthening City allowing City to climb rapidly into the top four of English football and become a permenant fixture. The best players in the World were never going to sign for City (Robinho in terms of status aside) until they had champions league football.

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

I think you have to look at where we were when he arrived, he added some great players. as frank became more and more iffy hughes had to just get on with it and he did ok. we at least were more "buyable". agree with rsc, the worse signing in city's history. he had to go for that purchase alone. once new owners arrived and we were drawing every single game the writing was on the wall. he took us forward as did the next manager so that's all we can ask. pellers just by his nature will now kick on from here so all is good.

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

Always said bought right players but Mancini was needed to push them on a level,Barry, NDJ, Bellamy, Given(until Joe was ready) Lescott, Zaba, Kompany, got best out of Ireland and if i remember correctly he did interview when he took over asking why Sturridge not signed up, by that time Chelsea had got into his ear.

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

Still getting a feel for this place... I know some of you love a wind up, but when you receive pages of ridicule is that really the desired result? A successful wind up should fool people into actually considering your weird stance. The jig is up, Robbo.

It's not like Hart was in the PFA team of the year when on loan and then was still on the bench in favour of Given's 'experience'.

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

He's found his level again.

We made some really bad business when he was here with ridiculous wages for average players and that set the trend that we're trying to break now. Mancini got the bad transfer window that tried to break that trend but it clearly turned out bad for everyone, dressing room unrest, poor CL and not really challenging the rags. Hopefully we have learned and will no longer be soft touches.

It's in the past as is Mancini. Pellers has exceeded my expectation in his first season so I'm happy with where we are and looking forward to the future.

What I like about this wind up thread is that it's got some quality posts in it as a result. I have a terrible memory so I'm grateful for the reminders of how things were.

Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered

Hughes kept us in the top flight which was all I really required from any City manager after the shambolic 1996-2001 period and the 15 years or so of typical City incompetence which preceded it.

When our current owners took over it was obvious he was going to get the boot sooner rather than later whatever he did.

He's an effective premier league manager for teams which will probably never win anything, which is just how City were before they hit the jackpot.
