Re: Mark Hughes forever remembered
There's a few points under Hughes which don't get stressed enough.
His first few months were overall awful. A few good home results, but never looked like getting a result away. Great victory at home to Arsenal, but shit defeats at home to Liverpool, united and Spurs.
A lot of my best memories of that first season centre around the UEFA Cup. And fuck me, we were lucky. Twice we had to go through on penalties against a team full of Danish postmen.
First season in the cups. Lost away to Brighton. Lost at home to Forest - this still ranks up there as one of the worst I've seen a City side play.
Micah Richards was a star centre half under Sven. Hughes played him at right back, and chose Tal Ben Haim instead - who knows where Micah would be now if he carried on at centre half.
We played a 4-1-4-1 system for most of the first few months. That middle 1 was Kompany (you know, one of the best defenders in the world, playing in midfield) and then we had 4 behind a striker. SWP, Ireland, Elano, Robinho. It was pleasing on the eye when we had the ball, but completely unbalanced, hence why we got turned over a lot.
We were in the bottom three (or four) on Christmas Day. This was a team who comfortably finished 9th the season before and had added a 32.5 million playmaker into the team.
To be fair to him, we did improve in the second half of the season. He finally worked out how to balance the side, and results improved, although we still only won one away game in the second half of the season.
Not going to go into all the transfer dealings, but I don't really know why he thought Sylvinho would be decent cover.
He then wanted to play 4-4-2. Still couldn't get the right balance in the team. Barry and Ireland just didn't work.
We conceded 4 goals against united at the start of September. Alarm bells should be ringing. You will not be successful if you're shipping in four goals. (Have we done that since?!)
Average performances considering the talent on the pitch until the draws started. Loads and loads of draws. We did beat Chelsea at home, but then we drew again.
His final week in charge; 3-3 away to Bolton. 0-3 away to Tottenham and 4-3 home to Sunderland. 9 goals conceded in 3 matches - it was nowhere near good enough.
God bless Roberto Mancini for sorting that team out. We may have not reached our goal of CL football that season, but the following two seasons made it all worth it.
