The Squad planning thread

The club are signing players like the rags in the early-mid 00s when they ended up bringing in Kleberson, Djemba Djemba, Forlan, Carroll, Barthez, Taibi, Veron, Bellion etc..

They won 1 league in 5 during that period.

Hugo Viana is in a very hard position. put into this by big mistakes in recent windows by Txiki and Pep.

only good thing that this season is so bad both in results and general displays, that it has to be 100% clear that big mistakes were made and it wont only be this season as the "price need to be paid for it"

You might occasionally unearth a rough diamond, such as Akanji, and you might discover a youngster ahead of time, but quality costs money, and nowadays even anything around the 50 million GBP mark carries a caveat emptor.

A diamond?? He's a 15 mil player who's lost a step..

And I can't remember the last time he scored a headed in goal.

Remember when we had Laporte, Ake and Stones.. we scored off 17 corners that season (21-22).

Now we don't do crap on corners unless the ball finds its way to Nico O'Reilly or Gvardiol. But we need to play defenders who can head the ball into the net again.

If we can't.. just park the bus is twice as effective since Akanji and Dias are absolutely shit at scoring from corners.

Agree. I don‘t think it remotely true that physicality now trumps technical ability, certainly not in any way that has made Pep‘s trademark style obsolete.
Our issue is that we‘ve stopped playing Pep football almost completely - no movement, no purpose, no cohesion, no discernible patterns of build up or attacking play (except giving the ball to Doku or Savinho and praying they can do something).
Pretty much ever since Pep arrived, other teams have, generally, been bigger, stronger, quicker. But we‘ve spent years wiping the floor with them. And our better sides under Pep would have done exactly the same to the teams we‘ve struggled against this year.
Of course we need some more energy, particularly through midfield. But more than that, I’d hope we go back to prioritising proper, top class footballers, who are also excellent decision-makers on the ball.
A settled system would also be nice.
There's no doubt a more athletic energetic team would be better than what we have now but put gundogan bernardo foden back at their best and we are having different conversations. The one area of the pitch I think it's imperative to have strong athletes is fullback and wingers. They don't all need to he but havering the option is

Veron was a player just didn't fit to be fair to him

Akanji played a crucial part in us winning a treble. He’s absolutely been a diamond for us and barely cost anything

And Forlan won the Pichichi twice after leaving

Hopefully we’ve a few surprise/decoy targets lined up that haven’t been reported on yet.

Also there’s too much of a headloss among fans on us not getting Wirtz
He was always likely to go to Bayern

I see Simon Bajkowski is reporting that Gundo and Bernie are likely to stay next season. I'm not sure I agree with that strategy. I'd be trying to move on both of them.

I agree.

If we want foreign additions this summer it has to be one in one out.

We have too many foreign player at the moment to add any more in.

When I look at the squad the thing that worries me moving forward is the number of top quality players we have.

We used to have genuine game changers just sat on the bench, ready to make an impact.

It's only 2 years since the CL final against Inter, that night we had Walker, Laporte, Mahrez, Alvarez and Foden all sat on the bench.

That's real strength in depth, it creates competition and raises standards.

We've made a right pig's ear of player recruitment since then, that's got to change this summer.

Football doesn't stay put in the past.. you have to improve or you get left behind.

The rags are living in the 1999 treble.
We're living in the 2023 treble..
but it's 2025 and we can't even beat Southampton.

Was at Brighton Liverpool tonight and I was blown away by mitoma when he came on.

We Should be all over him. Genuinely a world a class winger and a great age and has 2 years left on his contract.

Not to mention the commercial value he would bring also. There was so many Japanese fans in the crowd tonight going mad for him
